John Drury Obituary

John Drury

John Drury, a cherished family man, respected physical therapist, and committed community advocate, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2025, at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital in Coaldale, Pa.

Born on March 29, 1932, in Philadelphia, Pa., a son to John and Ellen (Neumann) Drury Sr., John's life was a testament to his enduring dedication to his loved ones and the community that he so dearly improved through his tireless efforts.

John's journey began in the heart of Philadelphia, where he was raised with a strong sense of purpose and community. After graduating from high school, he attended Temple University on a gymnastics scholarship. After receiving a Bachelor of Science in Education, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Army. When his 2-year stint in the Army was over, he attended the Cleveland Clinic, where he earned a degree in Physical Therapy. This education paved the way for a career that would touch the lives of countless individuals.

Professionally, John was known for his hands-on approach and his unwavering commitment to patient care. As a physical therapist, he dedicated his life to helping others regain their strength and mobility.

Beyond his professional endeavors, John was a key figure in the revitalization of Jim Thorpe, Pa. His vision, determination and boundless energy earned him many accolades and the deep respect of his community.

He founded the Mauch Chunk Museum, was a member of the Kemmerer Park Board, past president of the Jim Thorpe Commerce Association, member of the Jim Thorpe Lions Club, as well as executive director of the Switchback Gravity Railroad Foundation. In 2002, he was named one of Mauch Chunk Trust Company's Community Heroes. His passion to help those less fortunate drove him to become an integral part of Carbon County Chapter of Family Promise, which provides shelter for local families in need.

John's legacy is lovingly carried on by his family, including his sons David and wife Mary Ann of Jim Thorpe, Dale and wife Lynn of Jenkintown, and Mark and wife Lisa of Ephrata. He was a guiding light to his sister Elizabeth Rebl of Summerville, S.C. His role as a grandfather to 10 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to six, with two more on the way, brought him immeasurable joy and pride.

John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Janet Drury, who passed away in May of 2023. Together, they shared a life full of love, laughter and shared dreams. The void left by his passing is felt deeply by all who knew him, yet his spirit will continue to inspire those he has left behind.

As we bid farewell to John Drury, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and love. His legacy of kindness, philanthropy and community service will continue to influence and shape the town of Jim Thorpe and beyond for generations to come. John's memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Service: A Celebration of Life for both John and Janet will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, beginning at 12 p.m., in The Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center, 41 West Broadway, Jim Thorpe. Calling hour 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be private in Mauch Chunk Cemetery, South Avenue, Jim Thorpe.

Although we were better acquainted with Janet, than John, I think it´s fair to say that both left a very favorable, positive, and lasting impression on anyone who had the pleasure and privilege of knowing them. The beautifully written obituary allowed us to remember and appreciate their ongoing contributions to the community. Sincere sympathy to their family.

I worked as John's secretary for the Mauch Chunk Museum and Mauch Chunk Ballroom. At ballroom events - past Victorian Balls and annual tea parties, John entertained us all with his wonderful singing and tap dancing! He will be missed. Fondly, Barbara and Dottie Mumma

I met John a few years ago through a mutual friend and he and Conny visited my home and we also we a few times to "Jimmy's" in Hazleton. Last September he attended my 80th birthday party and we all had the pleasure of watching him dance to the music of the "Bee's Knees Band." What a fun time we all had and what a kind and gentle man he was. I wish I had known him longer. I will never forget him. May he rest in peace.

John was quite literally my oldest friend. Even though he was much older than me, his young spirt shined in a way that made me see him as a peer. We shared a love of history, tap dancing, and the Great American Songbook. He gave me my first job working at the Mauch Chunk Museam, and let me use his ballroom to film auditions when I was in town. My New Year's Eve spent tap dancing with him, dancing like an idiot with my dad, and singing showtunes at the piano, was the best New Year's I've ever had. John was a valued member of our small town, and I hope that somewhere in the Mauch Chunk Museam he will be commerated for the outstanding perservation he curated, not only of the town's tangible history, but of its very spirit. I am sorry I will not get to say goodbye in-person, as I'm in China, but please know he will be missed!

I had the pleasure of knowing John for almost 30 years and he loved to perform. He loved to sing and he really loved to tap dance. Whenever he did something up in the Ballroom, he would have me bring up my tap shoes and he and I would do some tap jamming together. For Olde Time Christmas, he would be up on the Balcony of the Inn singing Christmas Carols and would encourage locals and tourists to join him on the balcony and sing. The big thing about John is that he was living proof that age is just a number. John is definitely going to sadly missed
