Della Ward Obituary

Della Ward

Della Nadeen Ward (Schroeder) born on November 16, 1947, to Bill and Luella Schroeder, peacefully passed away on February 8, 2024, at Elizabeth Scott Community, in Maumee, Ohio, the town she called home throughout her remarkable life.

Della's journey was marked by a dedication to service and education. She graduated from Maumee High School and was actively involved in the American Legion Juniors Post 320 and the Maumee Sons Drum and Bugle Corps, (later known as the Glass City Optimists) where she served as Color Guard Captain. Her commitment to education led her to work at the University of Toledo Library, where she managed the Microfilm Department while simultaneously putting herself through college to obtain a teaching degree.

Della especially enjoyed spending time with her niece and nephews. Oftentimes she would plan a surprise trip or a scavenger hunt with them. Della's love of theatre even took them on excursions to Toronto, Chicago and other cities to see a play!

Upon retiring from the University, Della embarked on her true calling as an educator. She began her teaching career at Christ the King Elementary School, where she established an Advanced Math (Algebra) program. Her passion for teaching led her to Little Flower Elementary, where she not only taught but pioneered the establishment of a computer Department. Later, she dedicated the remainder of her teaching career to St. Francis Academy on the campus of Lourdes College, where she played a multifaceted role, overseeing Quiz Bowl, Debate Team, The Toledo Blade Stock Market team, and theatrical productions for both students and parents.

Della's commitment to her students extended beyond the classroom. She was always available for after-school tutoring and spearheaded fundraising efforts, including the successful drive to purchase new bleachers for the gymnasium. Her unwavering support for her students was evident as she cheered them on at events, proudly sporting the red and black. Della's legacy of passion, dedication and love for her students will forever be remembered.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Della found joy in attending the high school plays of her former students, cherishing a lasting connection she made with each individual she taught. She leaves a legacy of love, faith and creativity that will be remembered by all who knew and loved her. Her smile, spirit and caring nature will truly be missed.

Della was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Georgia Michon. She is survived by her loving sister, Debra (Jim) Thomas; brother-in-law, Ted Michon; niece, Heather (Adam) Felix; nephews, James Thomas (Brenda Smith-Martin), Theodore Michon, Anthony (Malgosia) Michon; and great-nieces, Lucy and Amelia Felix; and great-nephew, Max Michon.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Hospice of NWO nurse Megan and the Elizabeth Scott Community for their outstanding care. Specifically Camille, Stella, Colleen, Roxie, Beth, Amy, Jessica, Shannon, Christy, Stacey and Emily. Thanks to the dining, laundry and custodial staff as well. Also a special heartfelt thank you to Jane Wilde, a long time loving and supportive friend.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 15, 2024, from 3-7 p.m. at Thomas I Wisniewski Funeral Home, 2426 N. Reynolds Road, Toledo. Della's wish is that you feel free to wear your favorite sports team apparel the day of viewing. Mass of Christian Burial at Little Flower Catholic Church, 5522 Dorr Street on Friday, February 16, at 11:00 a.m., Msgr. Dennis Metzger presiding.
