Dirk-Christopher Host Obituary

HOST Dirk-Christopher Dirk-Christopher Host (formerly Hostetler) passed away at age 51 from pancreatic cancer early Sunday morning, October 19, 2008. He received his Bachelors degree from the University of Toledo, and was working on his Masters at the time of his death. He worked in sales with several companies including the Toledo Business Journal and AT&T. He helped his wife open her private family practice office in 2000, and worked with her there until his death as the resource coordinator. He enjoyed interacting with people and tried to touch as many lives with his wry wit and wisdom as he could. He enjoyed the Great Outdoors and was a proud Eagle Scout. He was an avid hiker and hiked in the metroparks most weekends with his wife and dogs. He spoke Spanish fluently, and made several friends on trips to Mexico, Guatemala, Chile, and Costa Rica. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Eleanor Host; daughter, Andra; mother, Laurie; brother, Daniel and sisters, Susan and Sally. He is preceded in death by his father, David Hostetler and brother, Dean Hostetler. In place of a funeral service, please join us at 107 Riverside, Maumee (north of intersection of Detroit and River Road) Friday, October 24th 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. for a memorial gathering. Donations may be made to Northwest Ohio Hospice, Toledo Metroparks, or the American Red Cross.

Eleanor,
I am in shock at this moment just learning of D.C.'s passing. I don't receive the Blade & did not know until Erin saw you today & told me.
My heart is breaking for you, I can only imagine the pain of your loss. DC was always kind to me, when I worked with the two of you, he always made me feel special. I will always remember the beautiful flowers I received from the two of you when I left the office, and how DC always showed concern & cheered me on through my struggle with breast cancer. May God have a special place for him in heaven and may he soon heal your broken heart. Please, don't hesitate to contact me if you ever need anything at all. My thoughts and prayers will always be with you.

Some of the most intellectually-stimulating conversations I have had were with D.C. in your office. His sense of humor made him someone I always looked forward to seeing. Deeply saddened by your loss, and praying for you through this difficult time.

How saddened I was to read of Dirk's passing. Dirk was in my very first class that I taught in Perrysburg in 1966. Although I continued teaching another 39 years, Dirk and his family have always stood out as very special and interesting. I am so glad he did so many positive things and influenced so many people in the following 40 some years. Beth Schmuhl Flint, MI

Dr. Host,
I am SOOOOOO sorry. I just called the office and Charlene told me. It nearly knocked me out of my go-cart.

I've NEVER seen a married couple who WANTED to be together nearly 24/7 like you & DC did. It was SOOOOOOO nice to see, not to mention inspirational.

DC ALWAYS made me laugh :0> & made me feel welcome in "your" office. I will NEVER forget his kindness, his sense of humor, his niceness to Rosie.

GUARANTEED! you, DC's daughter, and your families will be in my prayers.

Please take care and know that DC's up in heaven making God, Jesus & the rest of the people up there laugh lots and lots.

Love,
SEANA

He made us laugh alot which was something that I have never forgotten.

Great memories like the ones I have of time I spent with your family are treasured everyday.

We are saddened to hear the news and our prayers and love are extended to all Dirk's family and friends.

Von wishes to be remembered to you all, especially Laurie and sends her love as well.

All our love to you all.

Dear Dr. Host and family.
D.C. was a very colorful man and he was always professional. He was very good to my family and I. I had a conversation with D.C. on the phone, just last week and he told me if I ever needed a designated driver, to call him. That was the type of man he was. He could make you mad and laugh in the same conversation. If there were something I could do, or say to help ease your pain, I would. We will miss D.C. .

Eleanor, I am so sorry to here about D.C., and his fight with cancer. It is so difficult to lose a loved one. Since I've been through this recently with the deth of both of my parents, I know there is nothing anyone can say to ease your tearing heart. With time things become different, but the reality is the pain remains. He will always be in your every thought every day, and that's how he lives on, in all of the silly memeories and stories. Memories become treasures, and last forever in your heart and mind. If I can be of any help, or you just want to talk, or want someone to listen, please call/page me. My prayers will be with you and your loved ones at this very hard time.

DC was a great guy and we will miss him alot. He made me laugh and always had a joke to share. He was generous and always making sure my kids felt comfortable. He also was a great inspiration to my daughter Amanda who adored him. Dr Host you are in my thoughts and I hope you are doing ok.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Dirk was a couple years older than me, but we grew up together on Lones Drive. Most of my friendship with Dirk was through Boy Scouts, we were in the same troop with his Dad, Dr. Kelley, my Dad and others. My best memory of Dirk is from a canoe trip (Star Life & Eagle trip), with Dr. Kelley, my Dad (Blaine), another two guys (I can't remember) and Dirk and I. We were together in a canoe and him singing Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" for 100 miles and 5 days over and over and over (but in tune and with all the words) . So know that every time I hear "Maggie May" know that I am thinking fondly of Dirk.

My Deepest Sympathy,
Randy Place (Eagle Scout, Troop 110)
