Frank Unkle Obituary

Frank T. Unkle

Franklin T. Unkle, born December 2, 1936, in Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

The son of Truman and Natalie (Rieck) Unkle, Frank graduated from DeVilbiss High School before beginning a life marked by hard work. He spent a short time as a Union Carpenter, worked at Lido Lanes bowling alley, and later ran the Park Café before realizing his dream of owning and operating Frank Unkle's Restaurant, a beloved local spot remembered by many for its good food and friendly atmosphere. Frank was very active in the restaurant community, serving as President of the Northwest Ohio Restaurant Association, and as a member of Lucas County Tavern Keepers, Convention Bureau, and the Easter Seal Committee.

Frank had a deep affection for classic and antique cars, especially his treasured 1946 Lincoln Continental, and he shared his home and heart with a long line of loyal dogs over the years. Whether behind the wheel of a vintage car or behind the counter at his restaurant, he was known for his warmth, steady presence, and ability to make anyone feel welcome.

Frank is survived by his children, Kent (Darla) Unkle, and Tracy (Bruce) Saba; grandchildren, Bruce Saba, Brandon Saba, Bridgette (Justin) Swartz, Shannon (Nick) Kimberly, and Shane Unkle; great-grandchildren, Brady Swartz, Carter Swartz, Mariah Kimberly, Payton Meyer, Arianna Kimberly, Bella Unkle, and Melaina Unkle; siblings, Charles Unkle and Louise Burr; and former spouses, Carol Lee Unkle and Sharon Unkle.

Friends and family are invited to visit at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave, Toledo, on Monday, October 13, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, or Cedar Creek Church.

I met him at Genecross with my Therapy Bernese Mountian Dog, Reggie and we would spend time talking about dogs and other things. It was always a pleasure to spend time talking with him. He will be missed on our Thursday visits.

FRANK UNKLE´S restaurant was the best in Toledo. An all around classy atmosphere, delicious food, with a down to earth gentleman who owned and ran it. He was always friendly, welcoming, and made you feel like you were his friend. He had a Bridal Show there in 1979. I was getting married and took my Mom, future MIL, and my bridesmaids. We had never heard of a bridal show...it was fabulous along with a great meal. We have great memories from Kurt & I eating there to all of my family having special holiday meals together there.

Fond memories of observing Mr. Unkle from our home opposite the Unkle home on Glen Ellyn, often strolling out of his house to fetch something or other from his car in the driveway, donning his pajamas and (quasi-bathrobe) full-length fur coat. Always kind, always thoughtful, always positive, always a gentleman, excellent work ethic. RIP Mr. Unkle. Warm regard, thoughts and prayers to Tracy, Kent and Carole.

The beautiful Frank Unkle's restaurant in South Toledo, on the river, is a fond memory I will never forget. In high school, it was THE place to go for prom or homecoming. Dining there with the gorgeous view of the river was so lovely. Thank you, Mr. Unkle, for creating a beautiful restaurant to remember.
