Jacquelyn Hubaker Obituary

(News story) Jacquelyn Hubaker, a retired bank executive whose first job was to help Toledo Trust customers open Christmas Club accounts, died Tuesday in her Oregon home. She was 84.

She had Lewy body dementia, her daughter Denise said.

Mrs. Hubaker rose through the ranks to became a vice president in charge of a group of bank branches. She retired in 1992 from Society Bank, which later became KeyBank, both successors to the Toledo Trust Co. and Trustcorp.

In 1984, she was an honoree of Tribute to Women In Industry, a program of the YWCA to recognize women for professional achievement.

"She was dedicated to her work and was willing to put the time in that was needed," said Mary Lou Duseberg, who retired as a senior vice president of Toledo Trust and oversaw the bank branch system. "She had an aptitude for people, and she was knowledgeable about her job."

Mrs. Hubaker, whose mother was a Toledo Trust teller, started at the Oregon branch in the early 1960s. Seated on the aisle, she enrolled customers to the Christmas Club, a savings account that allowed participants to plan for holiday shopping expenses by putting aside cash.

Branch manager Fred Hansen asked her to be a substitute teller, her first step up. She advanced from the teller window to be named an assistant manager of the Sylvania branch before winning promotions to manager, first of the Central Avenue branch in Sylvania Township and then of the East Toledo branch.

She was named assistant treasurer of Toledo Trust in 1978. By 1982, she worked in downtown Toledo and was responsible for the Superior Street branch and four other offices as an assistant vice president.

"She was just a smart lady," her husband said. "She took all kind of seminars in banking, so she became pretty proficient in banking, and she had a personality that wouldn't stop. The people who worked with her and for her adored her."

She'd been active in the Oregon chapter of Business and Professional Women, as her mother had been, and Zonta International, the women's service organization.

In retirement, she and her husband traveled - occasionally with Mrs. Duseberg and her husband, David - and spent winters in Mesa, Ariz.

"She was fun and easy going and easy to get along with," Mrs. Duseberg said.

She was born Sept. 2, 1932, in Plainwell, Mich., to Josephine and Claud May. The family moved when she was in grade school, and she was a 1950 graduate of Clay High School, in what was then Oregon Township.

Surviving are her husband, Richard Hubaker, whom she married Feb. 24, 1951; daughters Denise Pankratz and Tamara Hubaker; son, Mark Hubaker; brother, David May; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Thursday at at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel. Memorial services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 4 in First St. John Lutheran Church, East Toledo, where she was a member.

The family suggests tributes to a charity of the donor's choice.
