John Tansel Obituary

John Ruskin Tansel, Sr.

John Ruskin Tansel, Sr., 71, of Waterville, OH, the greatest man we have ever known, passed through the gates of heaven on July 7, 2017. He was born August 21, 1945. He was married to the love of his life, Kathleen (Simon), for 52 years.

He retired from Seaway Foodtown in 1996. John was an avid fan of Ohio State, Cleveland Browns and Detroit Tigers. He spent many years watching his children and grandchildren's sports. Classic cars were a big part of his life. He enjoyed the time he spent restoring classic cars with each son.

Left to honor his memory are his wife, Kathleen; sons, Scott (Tina), Brad (Kelly), and John Jr. (Hazie); grandchildren, Zachary, Drew, Josh, Deion, Morgan, Sage, Sawyer, and Devin. Also surviving are his mother, Bernadine Johnston; brothers, Michael (Jan), Terry (Barb), and Grant (Barb). John was preceded in death by his father, Louis and stepfather, Bill Johnston.

We have never known a man who carried a bigger heart. Our love for you will be etched in our hearts forever.

Visitation will take place Tuesday, July 11, 2017 from 2 p.m. until the time of service at 7 p.m. at Peinert-Dunn Funeral Home, 7220 Dutch Rd., Waterville, OH. The family suggests giving memorial contributions to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or American Cancer Association. To leave an online memory please visit

Heartfelt condolences to the Tansel family at the loss of their loved one. John was one of my favorite classmates at Anthony Wayne H.S. He was always happy and lots of fun. I am so sorry to learn of his passing. It's great to know that he lived such a full life surrounded by those he loved and who loved him. Lots of wonderful memories..............

Kathy,
John was such a truly nice man, with a heart of gold. He never had an unkind word to say about anyone. I'm very blessed that I got to know the two of you: my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. He will be missed.

I remember john as a very good and kind man. He made it easy to like him. He went out of his way to make you feel at home, and at ease. It is for this and other reasons, I consider it a previlege to know him and his family. He will be missed.
