Orris Tabner Obituary

(News story) Orris Tabner, who was welcomed into Toledo homes twice nightly for decades over WTOL-TV, Channel 11, and delivered sports news with authoritative ease, died Tuesday in his South Toledo home. He was 83.

He'd been in declining health since breaking a hip at the end of August, his daughter, Amy, said.

Mr. Tabner was WTOL sports director when he retired Feb. 9, 1996. Not long before, he'd been interviewing the Detroit Tigers' 32-year-old general manager.

"I realized he's the same age as my son. That's when I said, 'It's time to retire,' " Mr. Tabner told The Blade in 1996.

He'd been with the station since it went on the air in 1958.

"He was everyman," said Jim Tichy, sports director from 1974-2007 at what became WNWO-TV, Channel 24.

"He was one of the guys, and when you watched him on TV, you knew he wasn't some guy standing up on a pedestal," Mr. Tichy said. "He was a guy at a bar somewhere talking sports. He was folksy and funny, and he knew the business. He knew what it took to get an audience, and he was just a great guy."

Toledo area sports fans from the late 1940s into the 1960s could find the brothers Taberner - the original spelling - all over the airwaves. He and brother Doug changed the spelling of their last name to match the way people pronounced it. Doug was sales manager and sports director at AM radio station WTOD when he found Orris a position at its FM affiliate, the first in Toledo. Doug moved to WTOL-AM, and Orris became program director and sports announcer for WTOD. He followed his brother to WTOL-AM in 1957.

When the TV station went on the air Mr. Tabner produced brother Doug's Trophy Room sports segment during the evening news. The brothers anchored sports at 11 p.m. on alternate nights for about a year before Orris took over the television sportscasting duties.

"That was his milieu," said Jeff Heitz, WTOL anchor from 1974-2001. "He was comfy. He came across as comfy. He was professional about the whole thing. You knew he was confident."

Mr. Tabner told The Blade in 2009 that viewers still stopped him to say hello and how much they missed him.

"That's very humbling," Mr. Tabner said.

His brothers Doug Tabner and Joe Taberner were partners on Ohio State University football broadcasts and joined Frank Gilhooley, later sports director of Channel 13, WTVG, in a pioneering sports talk show on WTOL-AM. Jack Taberner announced University of Toledo basketball games and was host of a bowling TV program.

Mr. Tabner over the years was play-by-play announcer for telecasts of UT football and basketball and Bowling Green State University basketball.

He was born Nov. 8, 1932, to Ethel and John Taberner. He grew up in South Toledo, went to Robinson Junior High School, and was a 1950 graduate of Libbey High School, where he played on the football team. He attended Central Michigan University for a year before enrolling at UT and playing on the football team for a time. He received a bachelor's degree from UT in 1968.

He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army in 1955 and was stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C. He was public information officer for the 101st Airborne Division and played football with the post team.

His favorite sport was golf, his daughter said, and he formerly belonged to Heather Downs Country Club.

He and his first wife, the former Patsy Sanzenbacher, married Sept. 5, 1953. She died Sept. 25, 1981. He and the former Andrea Murray married in February, 1991. She died June 3, 1993, of heart failure while awaiting a lung transplant.

He also was preceded in death by his siblings, Doug Tabner, Joe and Jack Taberner, and Doreen Meadows.

Surviving are his daughter, Amy Tabner; son, Scott Tabner; stepdaughter, Amy Speweik; stepson, Thomas Kempf; four grandchildren, and seven step-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending at the Neville Funeral Home.

The family suggests tributes to the American Cancer Society.

When our annual Christmas letter was returned by the US Post Office, I feared Orris had passed. He and I served in the Fort Jackson, SC, Public Information Office together for nearly two years during 1956-58. And, he often visited Myrtle Beach, SC area with golfing buddies and we would get to see him then. Please know that my wife, Peggy, and I send our heartfelt sympathy to you and we have many fond memories of our good and happy times with Orris. I grew up in Carey, Ohio. We always watched the Channel 10 news, so we of course always got our sports from Mr. Tabner. Each Christmas I would always enjoy his rendition of "Yes Virginia, There is a a Santa Claus." I was actually watching the cartoon version of this...which made me think of him. I was actually doing a search, hoping to find his version on line when I saw that Mr. Tabner had recently passed away. I am deeply saddened by his passing. My condolences to his family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I had the absolute pleasure of producing newscasts at WTOL from 1989 until 1996. Orris was a producer's dream, filling when needed or wrapping it up quick. I always loved his humor and that twinkle in his eye, and that is what I'll always remember. Rest in peace, my friend...you've earned it.

So very sorry to hear of his passing. Our family had the pleasure of entertaining him many holidays at my parents home. He was great friends with my uncle, Bob Bunting. When we were with him, he always made us laugh with stories and bickering with my uncle. May the Tabner family find comfort during these difficult times. On behalf of the Bunting family, we send our eternal love to you all.

I worked at WTOL news from 1960 to 1971. During that time I had the distinct pleasure of working with both Doug and Orris Tabner. I still remember some of Doug's jokes which he told in the newsroom while preparing for a broadcast. Many of them could not be told on the air but were extremely funny. Orris was the nicest, most professional man you could ever wish to meet and was a joy to work with. My sincerest sympathies go out to the family for their loss. It is a loss shared by the entire community.

I only worked with Orris for a year as a producer for the news show, but what a joy. He always knew how to stretch if need be or cut for time and he never whimpered and complained as some sports guys do but I won't mention any names. His memory and his lovely spirit lives on in all of us who had the honor to work with Orris. He'll be greatly missed.

One could not have a better colleague at the anchor desk! It was a hoot to make small talk with a man with such a good sense of humor. A career highlight for me remains co-anchorng with 'O from Inverness, the Jamie Farr Classic and other golf tournies, he was a man who enjoyed life and that joy was shared with his colleagues and friends.

Amy and Scott, I had the pleasure of working with Orris for more than 20 years at WTOL-TV spending countless hours with him on assignments at MIS, TigerTown in Lakeland, FL and hundreds of other places.
Orris was always the consummate gentleman whether talking with admirers at Bud and Luke's, at a high school football game or during a private dinner with friends.
He loved sharing his sports knowledge with his viewers and they loved him.
He had a disarming smile and a keen wit that he shared with us.
Janet (Skunda) and I will truly miss Orris and our sympathies go to his family and Toledo lost a fine man.

What a great guy.... my dad Zeke Sarahman worked at the Madison Buffet and was good friends with Orris & Doug Tabner many yrsss ago. I remembered when Zeke died in 1979, after Orris' sports broadcast that night, Orris made mention over the air that one of his close friends died. And mentioned Zeke's name. Always enjoyed chatting with Orris too at different functions through the years as well. May he rest in Peace. My condolences to the Tabner family.

Mr. Tabner was always a welcome sight on the sports casts on WTOL which I've watched most of my life. I'm not much into sports but I enjoyed watching him each night. I got to meet him in the early 80's at his home, a treat I've never forgotten. I'm just one of many that will deeply miss him.

GOOD BYE OLD FRIEND.YOU WERE ONE OF THE BEST

December 2, 2015

I grew up watching Mr. Tabner with my Dad, Walter Powers, a Professional golfer in the Toledo area. Dad loved Mr. Tabner's wonderful sense of humor, his way of making sports interesting (even to a bored spouse!) and Dad always liked the fact that, above all else, Mr. Tabner was always down to earth!

Sincere condolences to his family and his many, many friends!

I worked in the engineering department at WTOL on Summit during Orris's prime. So many wonderful memories, such a gentleman with a great sense of humor. So many evenings I remember seeing Orris in his chair with his thermos of coffee, feet kicked up and reading the paper, monitoring whatever the game of the night was. Watching Orris and Jeff leave the station every night after the 6 to go to dinner together. It all seems so long ago now. He was humble, so knowledgeable and he had that warm smile that made you want to be his friend. Thank you Orris, and may you rest in peace.

We were saddened to hear the news on Facebook from a Toledoan. We watched Oris on TV for so many years, until our move to TN (downsizing from LOF 1994). He was the reason we watched Channel 11, he was always Happy, and made TV fun to watch. Our prayers are with him and his family. :) We'll have a Mass for you from our Catholic Church "St Joseph the Worker" Madisonville, TN.

He was a first rate sports' announcer. Orris always made you feel welcome in his company. He had a smile that let you know he was your friend and appreciated it. May his memory be eternal. Like many in Toledo, I grew up with Mr. Tabner as the original sports authority. So it was surprising to me when he attended my Grandma's memorial service in 2003. My mom explained he was a high school classmate. This past June, Mr Tabner came to my father's memorial service. We were running a little late and he was unable to stay for the service, but later went back to the church to leave my mom a lovely note, gaining assurances from the church staff that it would be delivered to her. I cannot tell you how unbelievably amazing that kindness felt to us in our grief. Mr. Tabner is far more than a local hometown celebrity to me. He is an example of the same grace, kindness and responsibility that my father had, and I shall attempt to live up to. To his children and grandchildren, I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved patriarch. Peace.
