Robert Schramm Obituary

Father Robert F. Schramm, OSFS

Robert (Bob) F. Schramm, OSFS passed from this life on June 28, 2022 at Flower Hospital in Sylvania, OH, from complications brought on by a stroke. He was 81 years old.

Fr. Bob will be remembered by friends and family as man with a passion for ministry and liturgy. His list of ministerial placements are about as varied as imaginable. He was an educator, pastoral minister, pastor, prison chaplain, liturgist, Retreat Director, and chaplain at the motherhouse of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Fr. Bob was a man who loved being with people, had simple but beautiful tastes - especially in liturgical settings, a cherished family member, a committed and faithful member of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, and, most importantly, a man of faith.

Father Schramm, one of four children, was born in Toledo, Ohio on February 23, 1941, to Robert F. and Charlotte (Thomas) Schramm. Father Bob is survived by his sister, Mary E. and her husband, William W. Garbe; and his brother, Peter G. (Cynthia - dec.) Schramm. He was predeceased his parents; his brother, Michael J. Schramm; and his wife, Sue Marie (dec.). He is also survived by nieces and nephews, William T. Garbe (Marlene), Steven R. Garbe, Sr. (Doni, dec), Je?ery C. Garbe, Marjorie S. Houlihan (Jerry), Lynn E. Tribble and Joseph R. Schramm; and great- nieces and nephews, William R. (Will) Garbe, Sophie E. Garbe, Steven R. Garbe, jr., Alexander W. Garbe, Joseph G. (Jack) Houlihan, Madilyn Houlihan, Colin B. Tribble, and Evan J.R. Schramm.

Fr. Schramm attended Gesu Elementary School in Toledo, OH, and was in the first graduating class of St. Francis de Sales High School to have completed all four years of school there.

Upon graduating from high school, Fr. Bob attended St. Mary College in Winona, MN for one year. The following year Fr. Bob entered the Oblate novitiate in Childs, MD, and made his first profession in 1961. He then attended Niagara University in New York receiving a B.S. degree, and DeSales Hall in Washington, DC receiving a degree in theology. He also received a M.A. in Religious Education at the University of Detroit. Fr. Bob was ordained on September 6, 1969 in Toledo, OH, and began his priestly ministry at that time.

During his years in active ministry, Fr. Bob taught high school at Northeast Catholic, Philadelphia, PA, Salesianum, Wilmington, DE, Aquinas, Southgate, MI, and Dominican High School in Detroit, MI. He was involved in pastoral ministry as pastor of Mother of our Savior Parish, Detroit, MI, SS Simon and Jude Parish, Saginaw, MI, on the Pastoral Team at Sacred Heart, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Christopher and SS Simon and Jude, and pastor at St. Mary of Good Counsel, Adrian, MI. Fr. Bob also spent three years on the formation team directing Oblate seminarians, five years as Associate Director of Weber Retreat Center, Adrian, MI, and eight years as the sacramental minister at the IHM Sisters Motherhouse, Monroe, MI.

Fr. Bob retired in 2013 and resided at Gesu Parish in Toledo, OH. In 2021 Fr. Bob moved to Oakleaf Village Assisted Living in Toledo and was there until his death. Reflective of Fr. Bob's generosity and concern for others, he has donated his body to the University of Toledo Medical Center for organ use and anatomical studies.

A memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Peace Chapel at Lourdes University, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania, OH 43560, on July 8 at 11:00 a.m.

Donations in memory of Fr. Schramm, OSFS may be made to the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, PO Box 2868, Toledo OH 43606.

I´m a little late in making this small tribute, but it´s never truly late as Bob´s memory lives on, as does his legacy. I remember Bob as a gentle, warm and welcoming brother. The motto of the Oblates of St Francis de Sales relates to "gentle strength." This was both the gift and attraction of Bob. He mentored me in religious life and I continued to connect with him when I returned to Australia. He was one of the Oblates I sought out when I returned to the US over the years. Rest in peace, Bob. May you enjoy your eternal reward.

I ministered with Bob in Lenawee county while he was pastor at St Mary. He had great vision for the church and kind compassion for each person. We offer our prayers and sympathy to his family and friends. May cherished memories bring you peace and comfort.

How hard it is to lose a brother and a soul friend. Bob and I became friends as we taught with other wonderful folks at Aquinas High School in the late
sixties and early seventies...Our friendship lasted over 50 years as both of our lives kept reconnecting in various ways. We continually shared our hopes, our visions, our struggles. He
was a great supporter of me as a woman, as an
artist and as Dominican. i shall surely miss him but know his spirit will continue my journey/ our journey of gospel living.
Rest in Peace, my friend and brother.

My fondest memory is to recall that when we were both kids at Gesu School, we used to "play Mass". We were so serious about it that Bob's grandmother even made a set of child-size vestments for us! I would guess that Bob is still chuckling over that as he rests in peace.

Bill and I were so sorry to learn of Fr. Bob's passing. I have known Bob since my family moved across the street from them on Grantley Road. The Schramm's are a wonderful family. Our parents were immediate and long time friends. Bob and his sister, Mary Beth babysat my sisters and me. However, my most treasured memory of Bob is is he married Bill and me. It was a beautiful ceremony because Fr. Bob made it so. I hope he would be happy to know we are still happily married 52 years later. We send you our love and prayers as I am sure Fr. Bob will be greatly missed.

When I did my student teaching at Aquinas High School in Southgate, Michigan Bob Schramm took me under his wing and mentored me. I was lucky enough to be hired at Aquinas and I started my career surrounded my so many incredible people. Bob and I became life long friends. There are so many accolades I could list about my friend Bob Schramm. To me Bob was a loving light. He could find hope and goodness in every situation and every human being. We spent countless hours just talking and my growth as a teacher and human being evolved through those talks. I loved Bob like a brother and I cannot imagine a world without him in it. So to my friend Bob Schramm I say..."I will love and remember you forever...I will keep you alive through all the good you taught me...I wish you peace on this new journey and I know you will light up every where you go...thank you for helping to decorate my life."
