The world has lost a spectacular advocate, friend and teacher. You saved my life on several occasions in High School, and during my early years of college. You taught me so many things about how to care for children & people, especially those less fortunate than ourselves. You employed me for several years to babysit your children, Madeline & Lisa, and sometimes entrusted them to me for whole weekends. One college semester, you bought all my books for me because I couldn't afford them. I never would have attended college, let alone obtain almost 3+ degrees, except that you told me I was, "So smart." No one had ever told me that. You were the epitome of class, but as humble as can be. I loved being in all 5 of your classes, and I always felt safe there & in your home, which I rarely felt. I remember you scrambling eggs for me, tucking me in at bedtime, and challenging me to be a better/best version of myself. I still have every gift you ever gave me, though I am 68 and have moved 6 times. I am so grateful for your dedication to living well & for sharing your life with me. I am confident I will see you again in eternity. I'm thankful you had such a wonderful life with Jim & the rest of your extended family, with whom my condolences lie. Cathy (Waldon) Tullgren

Dear Jim, Madeline and Lisa,
What a wonderful tribute to a wonderful woman. "You had an eye for people who might be standing back or who might feel uncomfortable in a situation, and you made sure that they felt seen and heard." This sums up Shirley to me so accurately -- and I was lucky enough to be on the receiving end of her gift more than once along the way.

Jim we're saddened by your loss. Your deep love and respect for your wife is palpable. It would appear she was as focused and professional in her work as you were in yours. The strength of your loving family will be a benefit to all of you in the coming days.
