Alexandra Louise Porter Zumwalt lost her inspirational battle with lung cancer on April 17, 2002. She was President and CEO of Litigation Logistics, a company that provides the full range of logistical management support for large legal firm litigation throughout the United States. She was a member of Christ Church, Alexandria, VA. She fought this disease like she lived her life, not wasting a moment and with intensity. She loved to garden and her flowers bloomed majestically giving joy to all who stopped to admire them. She loved to travel with her husband, Eric. Alexandra never missed the opportunity to share her love of life with her family and friends. She was very generous with all she had to give, especially when it involved her nieces and her husband's children. In every case, she was these children's greatest advocate. She is survived by her husband, Capt. Eric "R" Zumwalt, United States Naval Reserves; her father, Robert G. Porter; two sisters, Jean Porter Riggin and Christina Jenkins Porter; two brothers, Stephen Dixon Porter and Thomas Webb Porter; three nieces, Christina Porter, Carolyn Jean Riggin and Elizabeth Alexandra Riggin and the children from Eric's previous marriage, Gillian Elizabeth Zumwalt, Alison Leigh Zumwalt and Jeffrey Eric Zumwalt. In celebration of Alexandra's life, a memorial service will be held at Christ Church at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 25 with interment at Ebenezer Cemetery in Bloomfield, VA, later that afternoon. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Alexandra Louise Porter Zumwalt Fund. Please make the donation payable to Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center and note in the memo line that the donation is for the Alexandra Louise Porter Zumwalt Fund. Donations should be mailed to Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, DUMC 3828, Durham, NC 27710.

I am among those old high school friends who look bakc on our times with Alex with love and laughter. I guess I hadn’t seen her or heard about Alex for 20+ years, but it’s hard not to remember those who were once close just the way they were way back then …lively, smiling, vital, mischievous, sweet Alex. It is a thrill and a joy to read all these messages about how Alex affected the lives of others and grew to be even more beautiful than we remember her back then. Even now she is bringing many of us back together, to share remembrances, to renew friendships and to love life. I was in the Chorale and Madrigal groups with Alex in high school. I still sing in a wonfderful community group, so it is appropriate that we remember her with the familiar words from a song our group recorded entitled "In Remembrance": "Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glint on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle morning rain.
And when you wake in the morning’s hush, I am the sweet uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die."
Thank God for the life of Alex!

Alexandra will be missed. I had the pleasure of working with her when she first arrived at Howrey Simon Arnold & White. To say that she was creative, is an understatement. Alexandra had an eye for beauty as she did apparently for her flowers. I believe that she has gone to a much better place where her sorrows are now over and her joy has just begun. God Bless You Alex.

I met Alex while working on a project in NYC for most of the year 2000; I will never forget her smile and funny jokes. She was always outgoing and vibrant; and always upbeat. I thoroughly enjoyed working with her, and she will surely, surely be missed by all. I will always cherish our dear, dear friendship. Always, My Friend!

I met Alexandra when she first came to work at Howrey & Simon. She was a wonderful person to talk with and organized the best company holiday parties ever. She will be always remembered by several co-workers at Howrey. Rest in peace Alexandra.

My fondest memories of my friendship with Alex were when, in high school, we would take off in her convertible Olds 98 (practically a tank) and go to Burke Lake Park to sunbathe. Also I spent the night at her house numerous times and we sat out on the little balcony of her bedroom and talked until the wee hours.
