LIEBERMAN
ALFRED GEORGE LIEBERMAN PHD
George Lieberman, 85, passed away at his residence in Rockville, Maryland surrounded by family on June 25, 2022 due to Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, which he quietly, but bravely battled. He is survived by his beloved wife Kari (née Høihjelle) of 56 years; two daughters Lisa (Sean McAuliffe) and Lauri (Christopher Rimorin); three grandchildren Jack, Jake and Brooke; and younger brother Robert. He was predeceased by his parents Oscar and Gertrude, and youngest brother Eliot.
George was born in Vienna, Austria in 1937. Within the first year of his life, he and his parents were forced to leave in the middle of the night, fleeing initially to France, then England, and ultimately starting their new beginning in the United States. Growing up in Kew Gardens, New York, George had a fondness for chemistry and everything science. This thirst for knowledge led him to pursue multiple advanced degrees, including PhDs in Electrical Engineering and Physics from CalTech, a MS in Electrical Engineering from CalTech and a MS in Physics from the University of Maryland and a BS from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. Following several notable fellowship awards from NATO, NASA-Goddard, the CEC Corporation and Hughes, and various teaching and research appointments, including Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland and Research Associate with Chalmers University (Sweden), George pivoted into a lifelong career in engineering/physics program management and research at NIST.
George's interests also included photography, fishing, and collecting rocks/fossils, and he had a genuine appreciation for the outdoors after having spent many summers in the Catskills. George and Kari shared a mutual love for nature and travel, which took them throughout Europe, Canada, and the US, with favorite destinations in Western Norway, British Columbia, Upstate New York, and Southern California (where they met). George cherished his time with his daughters, adored his sons in law, and took great pride in each of his grandchildren.
The funeral service and burial will be held at Garden of Remembrance in Clarksburg, MD on Wednesday, July 13, 2022 at 11 a.m. with Rabbi Larry Shor. The family will welcome family and friends immediately following the service in lieu of Shiva.
