Melinda, I was so very sorry to hear of Dave's passing. He was a good friend and a great American. I was honored to have the pleasure of knowing him and working with him. I'll never forget his guidance and help during those early days of the Bush campaign in 1988, and his continuing friendship and advice in the years after. Please accept my deepest condolences and know that you all are in my prayers.
Sincerely,
Bryan Slater

David and his brother Jack (and their parents Uncle David and Aunt Vivian) were just part of family life to my sister Nancy and me as we grew up in Norfolk, Va. The Fitzgerald extended family was close and loving and got together often, especially on holidays. And even though we grew apart in later life, I was still shocked and saddened to see David's picture in the obituaries yesterday. He will always be family even if just in memory now and I will always regret not having stayed close in later life. So here is a memory that even now makes me smile: we always knew him as "Little" David (his father David had been a star athlete on the Maury High School football team). And the Little David designation stuck even after he became a star athlete on the Norview High School football team and even after he became a Navy frogman and a platoon commander with UDT Team 11clearing Viet Kong booby traps for clandestine assault craft landings during the Vietnam war. Farewell my dear cousin.
