Michael Worley Obituary

WORLEY CAPT. MICHAEL J. WORLEY, USN (Ret.) Captain Michael J. Worley, USN (Ret.) died of cancer on February 4, 2012 at the age of 64. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents Captain Jesse D. Worley and Patricia Worley. Mike was born in San Diego, CA on September 7, 1947. Mike followed his father Jesse's footsteps (USNA '39) and attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1969. A Surface Warfare Officer, he commanded the USS MacDonough, USS Mount Baker, and Destroyer Squadron 36. After retirement from the Navy, he joined Rolls Royce where he served for 14 years as the Vice President of the Naval Marine Programs. In 1973 Mike met Irene Ayres and a marriage-for-life took place in the summer of 1974. The Worley family was completed with the birth of Brendon in 1976. A family man, Mike applied the same passion, dedication, organization, and drive that made his military and Rolls-Royce careers so successful into his approach to tackling the "game of life". His love of family and friends was the essence of the man. Feisty, competitive, witty, with a moral foundation and integrity second to none, Mike was a role model for all. His joy for life was contagious. Captain Worley was an accomplished athlete who starred on the Naval Academy baseball team for three years. A devoted father, he managed to carve out time from his demanding professional career to teach and coach his son life's lessons through soccer, football and rugby participation. The San Francisco 49ers, San Francisco Giants, and Boston Celtics have never had a more loyal fan, and he was passionate about Navy and Boston College football. Captain Worley is survived by wife Reanie, son Brendon, brothers Jay and Peter, and too many friends and loved ones to list. A wake will be celebrated at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Rd. Fairfax, VA 22032 (703-425-9702) on Sunday, February 12 from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at the United States Naval Academy Chapel, Monday, February 13 at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Capt. Worley's memory to the "Church of the Nativity - Operation Starfish" or The American Cancer Society at www.Relayforlife.org/clearwaterfl.www.Relayforlife.org/clearwaterfl. www.fmfh.com

I was a teammate of Mike's on the plebe baseball team. I was cut in my sophomore year. Mike, of course, went on to star for Navy. At each reunion I attended, as soon as Mike saw me, he rushed over and made me feel like I was his favorite celebrity. That's the kind of guy and leader he was. I lived in Arlington, VA. for 8 years, and one of his teammates mentioned, years later, that Mike hit two home runs against a local DC team, the best game of his Navy career, on that field. I got a foul ball in a perfect game at the field, which was located across the street from where I lived, 25 yards away. I held onto that ball. Coincidence? You bet. That ball is now a trophy on my book case in honor of Mike. It was an honor to be his classmate and teammate at Annapolis, and most importantly, his friend.
