I have known Nancy (and Murphy and Melissa and Mary Lynn) for over forty years. She was a remarkable person who possessed a formidable intelligence, firm common sense, and enormous kindness. She was a wonderful friend and I will miss her sorely.

Love you, Nancy!

I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Bird was my English Literature Professor at New River Community College in 1975 and 1976. I was seriously considering dropping out of school at the time I enrolled in my first class under Dr. Bird. She took an interest in my writing ability displayed in a journal project assignment, and called me into her office to discuss my future educational plans. Her encouragement and interest were important factors in rekindling my interest in school. I also developed a love of English Literature that still lives in me today. On June 10, 1978 I graduated from Virginia Tech, and I was thrilled to run into Dr. Bird, who was receiving her PHD on the same day that I received my B.S. I was able to thank her that day for the impact that she had on my life. I never ran into her again, but have always credited her with being an important factor in my educational achievements, and my life. I just wanted to express my sympathy, and to let you know that she made a difference for me. God Bless you all.
