Stephen MCNALLY Obituary

Stephen William McNally, 51, of 2226 Hampshire St., Quincy, died on Tuesday (Feb. 15, 2011) in his home, surrounded by his wife and children. After a year long battle with pancreatitis, Steve had been diagnosed with liver cancer at the end of January.

Steve was born Oct. 27, 1959, in Keokuk, Iowa, a son of Leo and Betty Ewers McNally. He married Mary Kay Drew on April 27, 1984, in the Church of St. Peter, and they celebrated 25 years of marriage in 2010.

Steve worked for Hy-Vee for 33 years, as a meat cutter and for the past three years had worked at Hy-Vee Wine and Spirits on Broadway.

Throughout his life Steve enjoyed making people laugh and letting his wonderful sense of humor brighten the days of friends and strangers alike. More than anything, Steve lived his life for his family. Always up for any activity with his children, Steve was a big kid at heart. Aside from spending time with his family, Steve enjoyed fishing with friends and working on projects around the home.

He was a graduate of Cardinal Stritch High School in Keokuk.

Steve was of the Catholic faith and a member of the Church of St. Peter.

In addition to his wife, Mary, survivors also include his children, Nate, Madeline, Noah, Molly and Nevin McNally, all of Quincy; his sister, Janie Sartory and her husband, Frank, of Keokuk; his mother-in-law, Virginia Drew of Quincy; in-laws, Barb McNally of Keokuk, Kelly (Steve) Lammers and Matt (Melissa) Drew, all of Quincy, Peg (Ken) Bono and Mike Drew, all of Kansas City, Kan., Kevin Drew of St. Louis, Rita (Carl) Dirkes and Molly (John) Judge of Massachusetts, and Kathleen Drew of Long Island, NY.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Dave McNally, assistant fire chief of Keokuk; his father-in law, John T. Drew, and his brother-in law, Dennis Tapsak.

Steve has donated his body to medical science.

Steve was so fun to be around. As a classmate he was one of the few that I had a overnight. He was into the cobra mustang. The next day we went to Mac's meat market and got to choose the candy we wanted.

I had the honor of working with Steve at HY_VEE as a meat cutter for a few years. He was a great man that wore his heart on his sleeve and would be willing to do anything for anyone at anytime! He was well known for his sence of humor and his laugh. I will miss him very much! My condolences to his family and my god bless them all!

McNally Family,

My daughter and myself had the pleasure of knowing Steve and Nate through the Citizen Police Academy. To this day at least once a week my daughter mentions the crazy guy (Steve) that sat with us at our graduation dinner table and how he was always making jokes and had us laughing all night. He definately left a lasting impression on both of us and will be greatly missed. Prayers to the family.

Dear McNally Family,

I worked with Steve for approx. 2 months (mid. Nov. 2009 - Jan. 2010). He was assigned to train me for a job, but he trained me more for LIFE! In this short time, I felt I knew him well. He had one of the biggest hearts and smiles of most anyone I have met.He loved to laugh and made me laugh (usually cause he was laughing at himself). He often talked of his family. (Why he enjoyed spending time with his wife & children and why he suddendly began driving a Jeep Liberty). He would offer to walk out with me when I smoked and would offer me a cinnamon disk instead. I offered him a cinnamon disk from Wally World once, but he said he liked BRACK'S. He was right about that!
I now picture Steve looking from heaven, smiling! Sometimes he is laughing at me, but I get the feeling he knows i will get it someday...:)

I am sorry for your loss! It is difficult for me, only knowing him for a brief period of time! It is difficult for me to imagine your grief!

Some people impact our lives forever, regardless of how long we had the opportunity to know them.

McNally Family,

I first met Steve at HyVee Spirits in September 2010 while relocating to Quincy for work. I enjoyed every moment I had when talking to Steve about craft beer. Steve would say "hey buddy, you are that MN guy. Buddy...what was your name again?" Steve would always say "how about Favre and those Vikings?" Knowing I moved from MN he would throw those jabs throughout the 2010 season. Knowing Steve for a short period of time makes this news tough to take. I would have liked more time to get to know him a bit better. Your father, brother, husband, and friend was a great man with an ever glowing personality! I'm going to miss calling Steve for a special craft beer order with Steve replying "what the heck is that crazy stuff..with that southern drawl."

I am raising one up today for you.

Steve, in the short time I knew you it was great! Rest in Peace, Buddy.

My condolences and May God Bless,

Jesse

Nate and family, please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. I worked with Steve at Hy-Vee on Broadway when it first opened. We had some good times. After my leaving Hy-Vee's employment, my husband and I still enjoyed seeing Steve when we shopped. He always had a great smile and loved to tease. Steve was a great person and the world would do better if it had more people like Steve in it. He will be missed. May God ease your loss. Know that he is in a much better place and free from pain and illness. Nate, I saw your dad in you when I worked with you at Vatterott. You have his sense of humor and great smile.

Dear McNally Family,
I am terribly sorry for your loss. When Steve worked as a security guard at the mall, he would always stop by F.Y.E. and chat with us about music, movies, or concerts that he was going to with his kids. He always put smiles on our faces and sometimes made us laugh until our eyes started to water. He would always call us by different names each time he saw us, yelling, "What's up, Frank?" or "How's it going, Jimmy?" Of course, we would respond with, "Not too bad, Johnny!" or "Hangin' in there, Billy!" I know I didn't know Steve that well, but I could tell by his kind nature that he truly was a good person. When I found out that he was diagnosed with cancer, my heart dropped. It is such a shame to lose people in this world that make so many people happy, even in the slightest way. I'm sure that he made many happy memories with your family that you will cherish forever, and I know you will find comfort in those memories. I will always remember him as someone who could always brighten up my day, no matter how slow and boring my work day was. He was, simply put, a great guy.

My dearest sympathies to your entire family,

Matt Parker

P.S.- I know there is a benefit on March 5th for Steve. Please feel free to stop by F.Y.E. for a donation. We would be more than happy to do so.

Dear McNally Family-
I went to school with Dave McNally, and always thought of Steve as Dave's cute, 'little' brother, who always had a mischievous grin on his face. This usually meant, that Dave and I had to watch our backs and/or that trouble was close behind, as well as my 'little' brothers, Mark and Andy!! Steve, like his brother, was one of a kind! I can't imagine your loss BUT please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
With Sympathy,
Julie
