Phyllis Steger Obituary

CHEPACHET - Phyllis (Chase) Steger, 94 of Chepachet and Wakefield, joined the Lord on Easter Sunday. My Mom was a gentle, loving person, a force of faith, and aware of the love flowing to her from family and friends - even up to her final day of life. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Byron C. Steger.

Phyllis is the retired Church Secretary of Chepachet Union Church where she served 6 Pastors and dozens of Interims for 40 years, was a member since her youth, a Sunday school teacher, Choir member, youth leader and an active member of the Rho Delta Club. At the Church she chaired/co-chaired numerous events including May Breakfasts, Strawberry Suppers, Christmas Bazaars and Fourth of July Parade concessions; in 1995 serving as Honorary Marshall of the Ancient's and Horrible's Parade. She is also retired from the position of Secretary and Treasurer of the Acotes Hill Cemetery Association, where she still served on the board at the time of her passing.

Phyllis was previously an administrative assistant at the Glocester Town Hall, until the Church requested her services full time. She served as President of the Glocester Manton Free Library Board of Trustees and was a member of Philia Chapter #13 OES. She proudly carried on the legacy of previous leaders in the Town of Glocester, chairing the Glocester Senior's Association they incorporated in 1976, until the town built the Senior Center, and the Association was deemed redundant and therefore dissolved. Pre-pandemic, her idea of great fun was joining her Cribbage Player friends at the Senior Center and playing that game.

Phyllis is a graduate of Burrillville High School, class of '45, and also Edgewood Secretarial School. Following her graduation, she joined her cousin Blanche in Homestead, FL as a secretary at the Air Force Base, after which she decided to move to California with a girlfriend where she serendipitously met Byron, who became the love and light of her life for 61 years.

Phyllis is survived by her Daughter Linda Steger Olbrys and her husband Jim of Manchester, CT; granddaughter Megan Olbrys and her husband Jose Mogollon of Branford, CT; granddaughter Lindsey Olbrys Cook, and great-granddaughters Virginia Grace and Della Mae, all of Bridgewater, VA. Phyllis was the sister of the late James (Jiggs) Chase also of Chepachet. She was deeply loved by her niece and nephews, and cousins-by-the-dozens.

She enjoyed summering in Wakefield, porch parties and watching the boat activity on Point Judith Pond from the Adirondack Chairs; but her heart and soul remained in Chepachet, where she was always happy to return home.

A visitation will be Thursday, April 8, 2021 from 4-7 PM in the Tucker-Quinn Funeral Chapel, 643 Putnam Avenue, Greenville. Her funeral will be held Friday at 10 AM in the Tucker-Quinn Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in the Acotes Hill Cemetery, Chepachet. Face masks and social distancing will be observed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Chepachet Union Church, Drawer E, Chepachet, RI 02814, or, the Ponaganset High School Scholarship Fund, 91 Anan Wade Road, North Scituate, RI 02857, or, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168 will be appreciated.

Your mom will forever be part of my happiest Chepachet Union Church memories. She brought her light hearted, caring ways to everything from church suppers to vacation bible school. She was a very special lady. Sending love and wishing you peace today and in the days ahead.

My fondest memory of Phyllis was a band get together at her house. I am a little hazy on the details, but someone asked about a party game. We were at an odd age, and Pin the Tale on the Donkey was out of the question. The night before, I had heard Orson Bean describe a card game on the Johnny Carson show. It was called "Murder". Long story short, this game became a staple of my high school years and people still mention it to me. As I was in the safe zone, she came in and asked me about the game and a subtext that made it so popular. I claimed I had no idea of what she was talking about. She laughed and grinned.

We will miss you Phyllis! You still were so good at playing cribbage with us and scrabble too. In the short time we cared for you it was a joy to see you every day and loved to spend that precious time laughing and enjoying our companionship. We know you are at peace with the Lord and look forward to meeting you again in Our Fathers House.

I am so honored to have called her my aunt. She was such a social butterfly and had the wit and humor of a Chase through and through. Rest In Peace Aunt Phyllis. We love and miss you. Deepest sympathies to “Aunt” Linda and Jim.
