Waldemar G. Dahl

Waldemar G. Dahl, 89, died Wednesday, November 19, 2008, in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Mr. DahI, the founder of Montdomaine Cellars, had retired to Virginia from his position of CEO of Falcon-bridge International, the nickel company based in Toronto. Previously Mr. DahI was the Vice President of Sales for Latrobe Steel of Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

He was born in Bridgeport Connecticut, and educated at Hall High, West Hartford, Connecticut and at Trinity College.

During his youth, Mr. DahI had a radio show with his own band. He married Alice Gale of Windsor, Connecticut, in 1941. Then he entered the United States Navy in that year as a seaman, but emerged a Lieutenant Commander. His beloved wife died in Charlottesville on April 16, 2006, after 64 years of marriage.

They are survived by their children, Stephen, Linda, Mark, and Sara Gale DahI; and by eight grandchildren, Alyssa Kate, Justin and Blake DahI, Jonathan and Alexandra DahI, Amalia Grimes, and Caitlin and Melinda Foley. Another granddaughter, Lauren Bess Foley, was lost in a tragic accident December, 2004. His sister, Rhoda Karrer and his brother, Clifford DahI survive him also.

"Wally" DahI was instrument-al in the American ferrous metal markets, and later applied his marketing mastery to the Canadian Nickel Industry, implementing a huge growth for Falconbridge Nickel Mines. Upon his retirement, he bred Angus cattle, raised cutting horses, founded a Virginia winery, and consulted at the Engineering Department, University of Virginia. At University of Virginia, Associate Professor DahI supervised magnetic bearing research.

A private service with interment is planned.

In lieu of flowers, contri-butions in his name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Central Virginia, 674 Hillsdale Drive, Suite 1, Charlottesville, VA, 22901.

Funeral arrangements are handled by Thacker Brothers Funeral Home of Scottsville, Virginia.

I went to work for Falconbridge when my husband and I emigrated to Canada in 1970 and ended up working for Wally for five years before I left to start a family and, ultimately, our own business. Larger than life, Wally had an exuberance and energy for life, and I've never forgotten him. Although Stephen was the only one of his children I met, Wally spoke about all of them with great pride. My condolences on your loss.

My heart and prayers go out to all of you. Bud was in my wedding back in '51 and they both were close to my sister Arlen Mitchell who died the same day as Alice. The world will miss them. Affectionately, Anne Irwin
