Jacqueline Andersen Obituary

Jacqueline Jean Jeffs Andersen Jacqueline Andersen, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of February 2. She suffered from heart failure for a year before her death.
She was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho, on October 12, 1930, to Jack and Vera Stokes Jeffs. She lived in Logan, Utah, and St. Paul, Minnesota, before moving to San Francisco, her home since 1955. In 1961, she traveled to Helsinki, Finland, where she lived with her family for two years while her then-husband was a visiting lecturer at the University of Finland under the Fulbright Program. In Finland, Jackie made life-long friends, traveled bravely through the capitals of Europe, and created a prize-winning ryijy rug, which still hangs proudly on her living room wall.
She leaves four daughters, Ellen Reid (Randall, deceased), Cameron Egan (Michael), Jordan Goldstein (Allan), and Adrian King (Steve), seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, as well as four nephews and three nieces. Her sister Estelle Clayton Littlefield and her brother Richard Jeffs predeceased her. She was married from 1950 until 1968 to Stanley Peter Andersen, who also predeceased her.
She was an English teacher at Lincoln High School and Lowell High School before retiring in 1988 to read, travel and enjoy her family and the San Francisco 49ers. In her roles as mother and teacher, she instilled a love for learning in her family and her students, valuing clarity of thought, wit and acuity of expression above all. Her mind was sharp until the end, evidenced by the Scrabble game left unfinished in which she scored a triple word. She loved reading literature and later listening to audio books as her vision faded. She was probably one of Amazon's best customers. She modeled a strong social and political conscience from the early days of civil rights and anti-war rallies in San Francisco to her profound joy in the President's re-election in 2012. She was active in forming and nurturing the San Francisco teachers' labor union.
Plans for a memorial are being made. For more information, please contact one of her daughters. If desired, donations in her memory to the San Francisco Food Bank will correspond to her good example.

Ms Andersen was an amazing teacher who taught me public speaking. Ours was the 7.30am class, and I remember how much she spoke about public service, and the Civil Rights movement. She truly inspired me as I had just arrived in the States. My final speech was on international relations and public diplomacy, and Ms Andersen truly supported me, and made me feel so welcome and valued. She also loved my speech, and clapped harder than anyone else!! I think that was the last year she taught before she retired. I will never forget her... She was a great humanitarian, and she inspired me in those days at Lowell, to be a good student, who produced original work, but also to be a good person. God bless her, and may her soul find everlasting peace. I offer my 'dakshina' to her, as one says in India.

She was a great teacher I had in 1967. I'm sorry to hear of her passing. I know, though, she's at peace with God.

Jackie was a wonderful colleague and unforgettable. Period. I would wish that her daughter Jordan could contact me. I'm in the SF phone book.
