Michael Dean "Omar" Poteat

Spartanburg, SC – Michael Dean "Omar" Poteat, 70, passed away on September 13, 2025. He was the son of Nancy Ivey (Roger) and the late Joe Poteat. Omar was also "going steady" with Kim Dillard for a loving 23 years. Omar lived a full and meaningful life, defined by his love for family, community, and adventure. A dedicated member of "The Shop of Spartanburg", he had countless miles and memories on the open road. His devotion also extended beyond riding where Omar was a proud member of Whitney Masonic Lodge, the Mid-City Shrine Club - where he served as a Past President, and the Mid-City Hillbilly Motorcade. One of Omar's greatest joys was bringing smiles to children and families as Santa Claus, a role he cherished for many years. He proudly appeared as Santa in the NC/SC Shrine Bowl parades, sharing jolly warmth and belly laughs with everyone he met. Omar found happiness in riding motorcycles, spending time outdoors, traveling, and simply enjoying the company of his family and loved ones. He was also known to appreciate a good nap. Later in life, his heart found its greatest purpose in helping raise his granddaughter, into whom he poured endless love, guidance, and devotion. Omar's life was one of generosity, adventure, and care - a legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him. In addition to his mother, Nancy, and his "steady girl", Kim, he is survived by his sister, JoAn Sartor (Robb) and his beloved granddaughter, Kimberly Dillard. In addition to his father, Joe, he is preceded in death by his brother, Mark Poteat. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Mid-City Shrine Club on Sunday, September 28, 2025 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Shriner's Children's Hospital of Greenville at 950 W Farris Road Greenville, SC 29605 or a donation box will be available during the Celebration of Life.
