James Swink Obituary

Published by Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home on Dec. 6, 2014.
James Edward Swink Sr., 78, of Rusk, was born March 14, 1936, in Sacul, Texas. He passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014, at his residence. He was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis J. and Allie Mae Swink; his foster parents, Obie and Grace Walker; and one sister, Rosemary Sandlin. He is survived by his wife, Jeanie; three sons, Jed Swink of Flint, Texas, Dan Swink and Charlie Swink, both of Santa Monica, Calif.; granddaughter, Heather Eiland and husband, Clay, of Tyler; grandson ,Sam Swink of Flint; and two great-grandchildren, Sophia Eiland and Theodore Eiland. He is also survived by sisters, Mary Crump of Copper Canyon, Texas, Wilene Shuptrine of Rockwall, Texas, Vera English of Woodway, Texas, and Ann Phillips and husband, George, of Danbury, Texas; one brother, Joe Swink of Fountain, Colo.; and "his boys," Ian Chandler and Alan Goss. Dr. Swink graduated from Rusk High School, Texas Christian University, Southwestern Medical School and, later, the TCU Ranch Management Program. After finishing medical school, he practiced general medicine in Tyler for three years before being drafted. Following his discharge from the army, Dr. Swink entered the orthopedic residency program at Scott and White in Temple. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Swink returned to Ft. Worth where he practiced orthopedics for 35 years â€" 18 of those with his partner and close friend, Dr. Charles Renshaw, a TCU classmate. Jim was a member of the International Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Texas Medical Association and the Tarrant County Medical Association. After having a stroke in April 2006, Dr. Swink moved back to his beloved East Texas, and in 2009, returned to the practice of general medicine in the medical clinic at Rusk State Hospital, retiring in September 2014. In high school, James â€" as he was known then â€" was an outstanding athlete, excelling in both basketball and football. He was selected to the Texas High School All-Star Basketball Team his senior year and was named the game's MVP. He was named to the all-district team in both football and basketball and the all-state football team. He was offered football scholarships by numerous universities, finally deciding upon TCU after meeting Coach Abe Martin. While at TCU, Jim was selected to the All SWC team, was an Academic All-American, winner of the Swede Swenson Sportsmanship Award and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show as a member of the 1955 Look All American Football Team when he led the nation in scoring and rushing and was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. He was later inducted into the TCU Letterman's Hall of Fame, The College Football Hall of Fame, The Texas Sports Hall of Fame, the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame and the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame. In 1989, he was recognized by TCU with the Royal Purple Award and in 2005, he was honored to receive the Doak Walker Legends Award. He was selected to be the first Rusk graduate to be named to the Wall of Honor in 2003 and was designated an Outstanding Texan by the Rusk Industrial Foundation in 2012. He was honored by the Cherokee County Heritage Museum at a gala in April 2014. In October 2014, the Rusk football field was named Jim Swink Field at Eagle Stadium. Of all his many awards and accomplishments, Jim was especially proud of his service as a medical doctor in Vietnam where he received both the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Accounts of his military service in Vietnam can be found in the Library of Congress and in the R.W. Norton Art Foundation Oral History Project in Shreveport, La. Jim felt privileged to continue the legacy of his foster father, Obie Walker, by becoming a Mason and a Shriner. Jim thoroughly enjoyed his prominence and success but never forgot the lessons his dad instilled in him â€" first and foremost, to be a good man. Then always get back on a horse when thrown. He loved challenges whether they were on the football field, in a surgical suite or plotting verbal comebacks when someone actually managed to top him. In college, he planned to be a geologist but between his junior and senior year in college, he felt called to practice medicine. When Jim was asked during his admission interview at Southwestern Medical School how he was going to compete against students who were academically better prepared than he was, Jim replied, "I will just work harder than they do." Even though medicine was his passion, there was always a special place in his heart for the land and ranching. Nothing rejuvenated him as much as working on the land and caring for his cows especially his herd of pampered Brangus. Jim's character and determination were truly tested in 2006 when he suffered a major stroke. The same qualities and strengths that had earned the respect and admiration of so many and had made him a hero on the football field and in Vietnam made him even more of a hero to those around him. He handled the setbacks and disappointments with humor, grace, dignity and courage, and never once wavered in his determination to live his life to the fullest and to continue to be a contributing member of society. Thanks to Dr. Glen Bixler for his care, guidance and patience following Jim's 2006 stroke. Also, special thanks to Dr. Ariele Lee, Tyler Hematology and Oncology, and her office staff; Dr. Mark Morris, ETMC Rusk; Dr. Alex Petrakian, Tyler Cardiovascular Associates; Dr. Stephen Sigal, Sigal Heart Center; and to all the doctors at Tyler Nephrology. A very special thank you to the wonderful staff at Fresenia Dialysis in Jacksonville, Texas. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church in Rusk, Texas with the Rev. Jacob Smith officiating. Reception will follow the service. Burial will be in the National Cemetery in Grand Prairie, Texas at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014. If attending, use Lane B. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014, at the funeral home. Pallbearers will include, Arlis Corley, Alan Goss, Robert Grogan, Charles Hassell, Keith Kennedy, Ernest Hudnall, James "Bubba" Jared, Jeff Johnson, Clay Jones, George Phillips, Travis Sessions, Robert Shattuck, Ray Taylor and Don Woodward. Honorary pallbearers will be Pat Velasco, Marie Whitehead, Joe Williams, Hugh Pitts, Norman Hamilton, Joe Allison, Kenneth Simmons, Wayne Hardy and Harlan Crawford. I knew James and his sisters when we went to school in Cushing. Then I moved to Rusk and he did also and we went to Rusk High School. I remember him being so nice and polite and a wonderful football and basketball player. I will always remember James as a wonderful man.

What memories listening to Vern Tips on radio to TCU and nbr23 Jim Swink. It's too bad we don't have players of his character today. He was a class act. Thanks for all the memories. RIP Rusk Rambler.

More than any academic or athletic accomplishments, Jim was most proud of his three boys: Jed, Dan, and Charlie.I have never seen anyone more excited than Jim at the birth of his sons. He was a great surgeon and physician. He had great compassion and a special touch. He will be greatly missed. He was my best friend.

I worked at Huguley many years ago when Dr. Swink was in practice. He was always so kind and never put h itself above you. Later he was my physician and had such a great bed side manner. His office staff was always so kind, we found that to be a complete reflection of the person that he was. I remember my misbrand and I trying to engage him in a conversation about his football career and he acted like it was not a big deal but we knew better. RIP Dr. Swink

Jim was a sophomore when I was a senior in 1954-55 school year. He and the group of sophs that year beat Penn State and USC, lost to OU by 5 points in Norman and lost to UT by one point in FW. Sorry I could not have been around the next year when Jim and his teammates won the conference and went to the Cotton Bowl. Jim and I accidentally exchanged overcoats in the student center one day, both looked alike, and we had to return to retrieve our own coat from each other. God Bless Jim and his family. He will always have a place in our hearts.

Long before cable TV we "watched" radio, and the voice of Kern Tips, famed broadcaster, meant it was an important game, like the one between the Frogs and the Longhorns, when Jim Swink scored 4 touchdowns.

He started out as my doctor, then became my boss for about 10 years, but he was always more of a best friend than any of the other, he would have given you the shirt off his back and to me in many ways he did. He was and still is one of my really life heroes. and a great man and father. The worlds loss is heavens gain. Rest in peace, Mr. Jim Swink, you will live forever in our memories.

I first met Dr. Swink in his office. I was a junior in high school and had injured my hand playing football. I had no idea who he was, except that he was the man who was going to try to put my hand back together. He did, and it still works great to this day! I attended TCU, and then of course learned who he was. "Hey, that's the doctor who fixed my hand!" During the mid-1980's, while I was a student there, I ran into Dr. Swink several times at football games. He was a true gentleman. The TCU community has indeed lost a legend. My condolences and prayers go out to the Swink family.

My son was in an automobile accident in 1973 and dislocated his hip. Dr. Swink came to Children'sHospital about 2:00 AM and performed surgery on my son. He is fine today and I will always be grateful to Dr. Swink for his caring love for his pa tints. He was one of a kind. I also watched Dr. Swink play many a football game at TCU and now I work part time for sports there. My prayers go out to his family in the loss of such a good man.

My story starts with Dr. Jim Swink in 1979. I had injured my shoulder working for General Dynamics and the company just didn't believe I was hurt. I needed a second opinion, my Dad recommended Dr. Swink because he had performed surgery on his knee and thought he could help me. He accepted and was kind enough to understand my situation. Living in Ft. Worth I knew of the TCU football side of the Man, truly one of the great legends of Horn Frog lore and I was in awe of the thought of meeting him. Needless to say he diagnosed what was wrong, wrote a full report and I got the proper treatment thanks to him. Thirty years later from my wife's long friendship with Jeanie, Jim's wife, who has been by his side every step of the way in their most trying and difficult journey, that I got to meet this man all over again. I would like to say it's been an honor and privilege to have known such a fine person and to hear his life's stories and experiences. God bless you Jeanie and all the Swink families and God bless you Doc. May you rest in the arms of our Lord.

I first met Dr Swink when I worked at All Saints Hospital years ago. Later in life, when my grandmother was at Huguley Nursing Home, imagine our surprise with Dr Swink was called in for her. Always sweet, smiling, and with humor is the way I will remember this jewel of a man.

December 10, 2014

My thoughts and prayers are with the Swink family. In 1957 Jim took me under his wing at TCU and that started a long friendship. He introduced me to my husband.

First, to the Family, my family's thoughts and prayers are with you as all of East Texas mourns the passing of the incomparable Jimmy Swink. Please be advised that the Athletic and Academic Careers of Dr. Swink were a significant inspiration to quite a number of individuals who grew up in and around the East Texas area. As a young African American Black growing up in Nacogdoches, Texas, my older brothers always "made sure" that I "kept up" with the accomplishments of Jimmy Swink, a good man who truly made a lot of people aware that East Texas does, indeed, produce some truly good people. Jimmy Swink, much like the equally famous Oklahoma Football Coach, Bud Wilkinson, set a great example for virtually every high school youngster in America: it is possible to excell in athletics and in the classroom since brains and brawn can coexist. When I graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University as its first African American graduate in 1967, my fields of concentration were English Language Arts and Physical Education (Kinesiology). Thanks for the inspiration Jimmy Swink.

RIP, Swivelhips. A long time ago I had the pleasure of attending a motivational speech by Dr. Swink. It was in the Colorado mountains at another one of my hero's ranch, Coach Bill Allen. If you read the obit you will see just how much of a hero this man was, in all facets of his life. We need more role models like him in order to turn this country back in to what it can be.
