Joseph Roth Weeks, 39, of Vermilion, beloved son, brother, and friend, passed peacefully on October 23, 2025, from the late effects of childhood cancer.
He was a steadfast and courageous fighter all his life and was an inspiration to others, both as a survivor and as a person. Joe was born in Dayton, OH moving to Vermilion at the age of two. He was named the American Cancer Society's Living Angel in 2003. He graduated from Vermilion High School in 2004 and continued his education at Wittenberg University, majoring in English and Philosophy. Joe spent his summers working at the Great Lakes Historical Society, researching and archiving shipwreck artifacts. Growing up, he was a member of the Vermilion United Church of Christ, Congregational.
He went on to earn a Master's degree in English from Penn State University, where he remained as an adjunct professor teaching technical writing and rhetoric. Joe then switched positions and worked as an Analysis and Planning Consultant in Penn State's Department of Institutional Research, which enabled him to work remotely and return to Vermilion.
He enjoyed living on the shores of Lake Erie and enjoying local nature, disc golf, music, arts, cooking, board games of all kinds, and watching Jeopardy every day. Joe could be found every Wednesday with his trivia team at Rudy's. He also served on the Board of Trustees at Ritter Public Library.
Despite the many health issues he faced through his life, Joe was endlessly optimistic and curious. He will be remembered for his intellect, kindness, wit, and peaceful, steady presence.
Joe is survived by his parents, Frank and Cindy Weeks of Vermilion; sister, Jill (Jake Mann) Weeks; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; countless friends from every stage of life; and his beloved cats, Daphne and Luna.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, George and Judith Roth, his paternal grandparents, James and Beverly Weeks, and his aunt, Susan Roth Opperman.
