JAMESTOWN – Robert A. Ullrich, 75, of Jamestown, RI, passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at Newport Hospital.
Born on March 25, 1939, in Port Jefferson, NY, he was the son of Albert and Marie (Miller) Ullrich. He was an Eagle Scout.
His survivors include his wife Portia Little of Jamestown; his son Karl Ullrich and wife, Genie Sieber Ullrich, of Union City, TN; daughter Marie Ullrich of Grand Rapids, MI; and four grandchildren, Karl A. Ullrich II, Robert S. Ullrich, Carol A. Ullrich, and Sara E. Ullrich, all of Union City, TN.
He was predeceased by a sister, Marie Ullrich Donecker.
Robert graduated from the US Merchant Marine Academy in 1960 with a Bachelors degree in Marine Engineering, and maintained his Merchant Marine license for the duration of his life.
He then embarked on a lifetime academic career, and was the author of academic books and journals.
In 1964 he received a Masters degree in Business Administration from Tulane University; and in 1968 a Doctorate in Business Administration from Washington University in St. Louis. He then taught and was a senior research officer at the London School of Economics.
From 1970-1988, he served on the faculty and then administration at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. He was one of the initial faculty members of the New Vanderbilt University Graduate School of Management, which then became the Owen Graduate School of Management. While at Vanderbilt, Robert also helped establish the doctoral program and became Associate Dean of the Owen School.
From 1988-1997, he served as Dean of the Graduate School of Management at Clark University in Worcester, MA. From 1998-2004, he was Dean of the Ithaca College School of Business in Ithaca, NY. While there, he established the School's MBA program, led the groundwork for the initial accreditation of the School of Business by AACSB International, and supported the building of the new sustainably-designed School of Business home. The Robert A. Ullrich MBA Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate of the School of Business entering the MBA program.
Robert was a quiet individual who loved nature and the outdoors.
His funeral service was private, with burial to follow at a later date on Long Island.

I met Bob when he arrived as the new dean of the Ithaca College School of Business. I quickly learned about the power of doing your research well and saying little. I learned as much from Bob in 4 years as most of my other deans combined. Sure miss you.

Still missing you, Bob. I learned so much from you.

I wish I had worked with Bob Ullrich earlier in my career. I learned more from Bob as his associate dean than I learned from all my other deans put together over my 35 year career. Bob went about being a dean much like the best college presidents in that he understood that what matters at the end of the day was to think and act strategically, to inspire people dispassionately with well thought out plans based on the best the college could become.

My sincere condoleances to Marie and the whole family.

I will miss Bob's wisdom as a leader and his unique sense of humor. He broke most every rule of modern management, yet he was a brilliant leader. I worked as his associate dean during his years at Ithaca College. He made a major impact on my own development as a leader and as a person.
