Hazel Lucille Pedrick Alvey 90, passed away peacefully at Georgetown University Hospital late in the evening of December 31, 2009.

In 1988, Hazel lost her husband of 50 years, John Elton Alvey II. She is also preceded in death by her son James Alvey, her grandson G. Spencer Barrett II, and her great-grand daughter Melissa Pattison.

Hazel is survived by six sons and three daughters: John Alvey III, Marjorie Barrett, William Alvey and his wife Joanne, Norma Green and her husband Charles, Sandra Thurston and her husband Jerry, Richard Alvey and his wife Joanne, Benjamin Alvey, P. Michael Alvey and his wife Linda, and Jay Alvey. She is also survived by her sister, Grace Farrall, 24 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and many beloved nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

Hazel was born in Penns Grove, NJ to Clark and Helena Pedrick. She grew up in Penns Grove and Wilmington, DE, and moved as a newly-wed first to Washington DC, then to Lorton, VA. In 1966, they moved to Dumfries. Hazel and John built and opened a small motel and the J&J Garage in Woodbridge in 1949. They have owned several business on that property since that time.

Hazel was a member of the Mt. Vision and Dumfries Rebekah Lodges, and of the Fraternal Order of Police Battlefield 43 Auxiliary where she served as 2nd Vice President. She had worked as a volunteer at the Dumfries Elementary School cafeteria, and was an early member of the Potomac Hospital Auxiliary. Hazel was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed watching professional golf and college football, particularly the teams from Virginia Tech, the University of Texas, and the University of Georgia. Hazel loved playing Bingo, and until her recent illness was a regular at the Dumfries-Triangle Rescue Squad Friday night sessions and Saturday nights at the Dumfries-Triangle Fire Department.

Hazel will be cremated and a private service will be held. Friends and family are welcomed to gather for a Celebration of Life Saturday, January 9, Noon-3PM at the fellowship hall of Cokesbury United Methodist Church, 14806 Blackburn Rd, Woodbridge.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Mt. Vision Rebekah Lodge, c/o Brenda Via, 4031 Dominion Dr, Dumfries, VA 22026.

In Hazel's honor and memory, please take someone you care about to Bingo this week, and play a card for her.
