I was a student of Dr. Bogle's in the early 1990's. He was an amazing professor and person whom I hoped to visit on an upcoming trip to Richmond. When the his email address failed, I searched and found this obituary. I am deeply saddened by his loss. It is truly a loss to many.

Andrew - A conversation did not pass without your dad telling me something about you that made him proud. I'm so sorry for your loss and hope you are doing well.

I just read of Dr Bogle's passing in the Richmond Mag. In my senior year at UR (1981), Dr Bogle sparked an interest in the Middle East that I possess to this day. He suggested and sponsored my internship at the Middle East Institute. He had a passion for education, a seriousness..but always a twinkle in his eye. I never knew of his musical and other talents. He is the educator I admire, and appreciate, most. My deepest condolences and prayers to his family.

My folks (Hiltons) were very good friends with your Dad at Dakota Wesleyan University! Clark was so glad to see your Dad this last fall, and I had the pleasure of him buying me a hotdog at the DWU Football game. We were truly sad to hear the news about his death.

Mr. Bogle was an American original. There were none like him.

I had the pleasure of being a student of Dr. Bogle at the University of Richmond in 2002. I was a student in his Islam course. My interactions with Emory Bogle changed the direction of my life. Through his instruction in class, and insightful wisdom over many breakfasts in the student dining hall, he gave me guidance and advice that shaped my career and sparked a true interest in Islam and the Middle East.

Mr. Bogle was true character. One day, nearly half our class played hookie. He never addressed the class directly on their blatant absenteeism, but merely sent an email that said this: "A number of you were missing from class today. That is a shame. We cover some interesting materials in interesting ways. You will never have the opportunity to hear this information again. You paid good money for the information you did not receive. How did you spend the time your money bought?" No one missed class again.

Mr. Bogle's sparkling personality, quirky jokes, and sweeping musicality all contributed to him being as fascinating a person as he was. He cared deeply about educating students, both academically and personally.

I am privileged to have considered him a friend, and he made an indelible impression on my heart and my mind.

He shall be greatly missed.

I want to express my deepest condolences to his son's Andrew and Rhett, of whom he was so very proud, and all of Mr. Bogle's family.

My thoughts are with you.

Best Regards,

To the family of Dr. Bogle. I am saddened to learn of his passing and extend my sympathy. He was my freshman advisor and quickly made himself my history professor as well. As an impressionable freshman at the University of Richmond he had a big impact on my college experience and have many fond memories of times shared with him that I reflect back on when reliving the good ole college days. He was a great man and I am sorry for your loss.

Rhett and Andrew, I am so sorry to hear of your father's death. I am Wayne's daughter, Jeannie. The last time I spent with your father was at Aunt Anna Catherine's funeral. He spoke with such pride of both his sons. Each of you carry his hopes and dreams for the future. A man can have no stronger legacy than the family he creates. You must be so proud to know that Emory viewed all peoples of the world as his family. May the blessings of God follow you forever. Jeannie Brown Poston , Livingston, TN

To All Family Members and Friends of Emory Bogle (beloved brother of my dear friend, Linda Kay Bogle McFadden, whom our Heavenly Father called home prior to Emory's passing). When Kay was valiently fighting cancer, her dear brother, Emory, was a faithful, loving brother -- constantly showing his compassion in tangible ways (he was a wonderful help and comfort to her). But now, our loss--of their presence here--is their gain -- for, in Christ Jesus, to be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD !! May all family and friends be comforted, knowing that we, too -- in accordance with Romans 10:9&10 -- may confess the Lord Jesus, and receive Him as our Saviour and Lord and join Emory and Kay when our lives here on earth are over. Father God, thank You for Emory and Kay. We believe that they are with You -- and all their loved ones -- who have passed away (both before and after their passing). We, who knew Emory and Kay, were truly blessed. We miss them--but look forward to joining them in Your Dear Heaven when our lives here are finished. Until then, please comfort us and keep us, in Jesus' Name I pray. Amen.

I never knew Dr. Bogle but my late father spoke of the Bogle family quite often eapecially Fred who was close to his age and attended school together.
I just want to say that Ceres is a fine community and that we are proud to have such a distinguished man come from this area.
Sympathy is extended to his family.

I am shocked and saddened beyond belief.

In the late 70's and early 80's, every Saturday morning, Emory would walk over to my house. We would sit on the porch with coffee, discussing current events for hours.

He was a groomsman in my wedding in 1986.

He was one of my best friends and I shall miss him.

Andrew, our hearts go out to you. Your love and honor of your father left a lasting impression. From the short time he lived next door to us, we knew that he was very proud of you, even if he did not understand some aspects of your faith. May you take comfort in his love for you and the good times the two of you shared.

To: Andrew and Rhett, It is hard to accept Emory's passing. He was such a great person and friend. I'm grateful for the memoriesof fun we had singing together in the "Four Tones" (doo-wop music). The 50 year reunion of our singing group in July, 2009 was a blessing that we will all never forget. Rest in peace Emory. Frank Carroll

Our Deepest Condolences to Emory's Family. When he moved in across the street, he immediately began landscaping the yard - and spent hours & days getting it just the way he waned it. My favorite thing - in the back yard was a big Spider that he had sculptured - what pride he had in the University of Richmond!

Singing with Emory in a high school quartet (The Four Tones) certainly made many wonderful lifetime memories. How glad I am that we reunited for a singing session in the summer of 2009. He will be missed.

Dr. Bogle was a vivacious spirit who enjoyed lively conversation and sometimes controversial discussions... he was blessed with a quick mind which he maintained until his death. It was an honor to know him, and call him a friend.

I have to say I have always been so proud of Emory's accomplishments. From such meager beginnings he, through hard work and determination became an even greater man than what he was born being.
He was a very caring man and never lost touch with his family, always being at or arranging family functions. I will also never forget his concern for me when losing "Nanny" (as we called her) and comforting me by sitting with me on the stairs when, at the funeral, things became overwhelming for me. Thank you so much Emory, this is a great loss not only to the family but to all who knew him and those never got a chance to. My condolences to you all.

Dr. Bogle was my favorite professor and much of what I know of the Middle East I learned in his classes. I enjoyed speaking with him during football games long after I graduated. He was a great professor and an even finer person. David Adams (Richmond, VA

Dr. Bogle was loved and respected by so many UR alumni. Each year alumni would eagerly attend The Bogle Open which he faithfully planned and hosted each fall. I will always remember him pulling out the shotgun to signal the beginning of play.
I will miss him as will many others. I send my heartfelt sympathy to his family and loved ones.

I was never in a class of Dr Bogle's, but seemed to always see him around campus, at games and of course the Bogle Open. I had a chance to speak with him on multiple occasions and he was always available to share a kind word. We have lost a great advocate and friend of the University of Richmond.

Andrew and Rhett I am so sorry for the loss of your father. Emory was my cousin. I am Miller's daughter and it was great visiting with him this summer in Bluefield at Anna Catherine's as he and Wendell helped me with some of her things. He always enjoyed talking with my dad. I know you will miss him very much. Wendell, Ronald and Evelyn I am so sorry for the loss of yet another sibling.

I met Emory when I had the good fortune of moving across the street from him in 2004. A neighbor had thrown a welcome party to celebrate our arrival, but it didn't take long to figure out the real guest of honor, the most undeniably compelling character present, was none other than Dr. Emory C. Bogle.

It wasn't long before Emory suggested he help with our pathetic gardening efforts, his gift with greenery as evident as his kindness and generosity remained. From there, a relationship bloomed and the man who had more friends than I could count, made room.

My trips with Emory to attend University of Richmond sporting events were reminders of just how many lives had intersected, for the better, with his. Our discussions, which covered a myriad of topics, and always over coffee (coffee that Emory, typically generous to a fault, would insist on buying), had the recurring theme of his immense pride in the success of his former students.

I was lucky to sit in on one of Emory's classes at the University of Richmond and it was evident that he was one of the rare among us who had truly found a calling. After Emory's retirement, he volunteered for a local educational lecture series for seniors. He snuck me in despite my age, and I sat amazement as Dr. Bogle regaled, without the aid of notes, the works of Rousseau, Locke, and Smith - reminding us all that learning is truly a pursuit for a lifetime. Then, we drank more coffee.

Emory, we will miss your friendship, the flattery of your interest, and how after moving to Richmond with no friends, we were able meet a man who had many, but managed to find room for two more.

Rest in peace my friend.
