Dan was in the 24th Company with my husband Dick and we shared tours at RPI and Stanford. We each had two sons at the time and our boys went to kindergarten together. Our friendship continued for many years and we missed him so much during his years in the Middle East. He wrote when I lost Dick in 2010 and told me how happy he and Giovanna were in their beautiful home in Pennsylvania. Condolences to all the Leonard's on the loss of a wonderful man.

Dan was relinquishing command of Seabee Battalion NMCB74 as I was taking command of NMCB62 in '76 in Gulfport, MS. We got to know him better when I was Officer in Charge of Construction, Mediterranean in Madrid and he was Public Works Officer and one of my ROICC's on Rota, Spain. Dan was a highly respected, proud, competent and dedicated Naval officer. Years later I had the very good fortune of being able to hire Dan as a construction manager in Foster Wheeler Energy Corporation. He was a dedicated and competent manager of high integrity. Ruth and I became very close friends of Dan and Giovanna for the rest of his life and we often shared travel stories when we were together. We honestly believe that no matter how much he loved the Navy, his final years were his happiest and most contented. Our condolences to the Leonard family and may Dan rest in peace with the Lord.

I had the good fortune to serve as Dan's Executive Officer during his tour as Commanding Officer of NMCB-74. I joined the battalion while they were deployed to Rota, Spain, with detachments throughout Europe. Dan was a consummate and successful leader whom I viewed as a role-model. In particular, he instilled a sense of trust in his subordinates that resulted in our maximum efforts and our desire to not let him down. I had four Seabee tours - working with/for Dan was the highlight. My sincerest condolences to his family. You have lost a special person - as have us all. Bob Bell, CAPT, CEC, USN (Ret)

Dan and I had a unique connection: his older brother Ed was my brother Bill's roommate for their four years in the Class of 1952. It was through Ed that I met Dan at a Naval Academy reunion circa 1967 or so; and I learned he too was CEC. Unfortunately despite that our paths crossed only briefly, once or twice thereafter. Still we always felt a special connection because of our brothers. God's speed old friend and Seabee!

Dan was my model for professionalism and integrity when I served with him as a brand new officer in MCB FORTY. I trusted his council and enjoyed his friendship. He and Roger Clark took good care of me and I have never forgotten them. Thanks and God speed, Dale Bodine, CAPT, CEC, USNR(R)

Dan was a great Seabee and Civil Engineer Corps Officer. He and his family were our next door neighbors back in the early 60's when we were both in West Coast Battalions at Port Hueneme. I pretty much followed in his footsteps preferring Seabee duty over other CEC options and had six tours with the Bees. He will be missed. My very best to his family. With great regrets, Jack and Robin Buffington.

Uncle Dan lived life to the fullest. Reading his Obituary we're reminded of the extraordinary accomplishments he achieved, but we'd like to add what a kind man he was. With love to Aunt G and his entire family.
