Dorothy E Lewis

Dorothy E. Lewis, devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother and an exceptional teacher passed away on April 5, 2022 in her home in Ship Bottom, N.J. surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on June 17, 1939 in Paterson,N.J. and was the fourth child of Harriet & Vivian (Vic) Carlough. She was predeceased by her parents and siblings Shirley, Elaine and Warren. Dorothy graduated from the Paterson Eastside High School in 1958. She married in 1963 and was a stay-at-home mom while raising her two young children. She attended the College of New Jersey, formerly Trenton State, and earned a BA degree and certification both as an elementary and special education teacher. She taught for twenty-three years in the Waretown, New Jersey public schools.
She retired from public education in 2003 to become the Assistant Director of the Education Academy, a school for special needs children that she co-founded with her husband.
Dorothy is survived by her husband Roland (Ron) her children, Nancy and R.J. and his wife Cathy and grandchildren A.J. and Morgan. Dorothy had a full and meaningful life. She was an inspiration and role model for many. She was designated as a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International for making the world a better place in which to live.
She was a certified emergency medical technician (EMT), a volunteer in the Emergency Room of Southern Ocean Medical Center (SOCH) and a member of the Beach Haven First Aid Squad. She freely gave of herself to all, especially those in need.
Among her other interests and activities, Dorothy served on the Board of Directors for the Ocean County Girl Scout council, was a member of the Juliette Gordon Low Society and held memberships in local, state, and national PTAs. She was an accomplished seamstress, a fan of all types of puzzles and word games, skilled in an array of arts and crafts and an outstanding cook.
Final arrangements will be private. She will be remembered and missed by all the people whose lives she has touched. A celebration of her life will be held on a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, or your favorite charity. Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Home, Ship Bottom is in care of arrangements.
