James “Jim” Harold Johnson, age 90, of Marion, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2025.

Born in McComb, Mississippi, Jim spent the last four decades of his life in Texas, a place he proudly called home. A devoted U.S. Air Force veteran, Jim began his military service in 1955. Over the next 21 years, his assignments took him across the globe—from New York to Kansas, then California to Saudi Arabia, then Florida to Germany, then Washington to Thailand and onto Texas before concluding his career in Mississippi in 1976.

After his military retirement, Jim continued to serve his community through 17½ years of dedicated work at H-E-B. He was a tireless provider and a quiet man of great strength, known for his integrity and his unmatched ability to fix anything—a true jack of all trades.

Jim found joy in life’s simple pleasures: camping, fishing, woodworking, NASCAR races, and trips to the Gulf Coast. He was not a man of many words, but was always proud of his children and grandchildren. After the passing of his beloved wife of over 50 years, Shirley J. Johnson, Jim found comfort in camaraderie—often surrounded by his fellow veterans at a local spot, where he was affectionately known as “Jimbo.”

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley J. Johnson; his parents, James and Eddis Johnson; his sister, Minnie Mae Howle; his son, Gregory Johnson; and son-in-law, Rickey Travelstead.

Jim is survived by his older brother Charles and wife Pat Starnes of Ledbetter, KY; his children: Steve and wife Judy James of Cibolo, TX; Kim Travelstead of Burna, KY; and Dana and husband Marty Smith of San Antonio, TX. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Jackie James Silva of New Braunfels; Jeremy and wife Angie James of Boerne, TX; Chris and wife Sarah of Brookport, IL; Ashley and husband Justin Patton of Tiline, KY; Blake Smith and Nicole Montez of San Antonio; and Lauren and husband Jonathan Ramenschneider of Hondo, TX. Jim is further survived by 11 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

James’s legacy of resilience, humility, and unwavering love for family will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
