Lovis Reble Countiss

Lovis Reble Countiss, known for her sweet disposition and warm smile, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2023, in Blacksburg, Virginia. She was born on March 25, 1933, in Buchanan County, Virginia, to her loving parents, Jonathan Johnson Mitchell and Bertha Matney Mitchell. Lovis was a beloved wife, sister, dedicated professional, and cherished friend to many.

Lovis excelled in her education and nurtured her passion for learning. She graduated from Grundy High School and later pursued her studies at Radford College. With her hard work and determination, she obtained a solid academic foundation that would serve as a springboard for her future endeavors.

In her professional life, Lovis made a significant impact through her various roles. She devoted several years of service to Appalachian Power Electric as a home extension representative. Her dedication to assisting others was unparalleled as she worked tirelessly to provide valuable support and guidance to countless families in need.

Additionally, Lovis contributed greatly to the community through her work at the Virginia Extension office. Her expertise and commitment were invaluable as she shared her knowledge with others and helped improve their quality of life.

Beyond her professional achievements, Lovis showcased her creative side by hosting "The Happy Homemaker", a cooking show on WCYB. With an infectious enthusiasm for culinary delights, she delighted viewers with delicious recipes and helpful tips in the kitchen. Her warmth shone through the screen as she effortlessly connected with her audience and left an indelible mark on their lives.

Lovis also selflessly served the Johnston Memorial auxiliary board, William King Arts Center, The Garden Club, Highlands Festival, Arts Depot and 4-H clubs. Through this role, she demonstrated her unwavering commitment to philanthropy and giving back to others. Her efforts ensured that those in need received the support they deserved during their most challenging times. Lovis was an active member of Abingdon United Methodist Church.

Known for her kindness and genuine friendship, Lovis made an unforgettable impact on those who had the honor of knowing her. She possessed a rare ability to make others feel valued and loved through simple gestures of compassion and understanding. Her infectious positivity brightened even the darkest of days, leaving a lasting impression on everyone she encountered.

In addition to her parents, Lovis was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Countiss; siblings, George Mitchell, Maebelle Sartain, Joy Taylor, Everette Mitchell; brothers-in-law, Leo C. Scott and William Sartain; sister-in-law Maxine Mitchell; and niece Tenesa Mitchell.

Survivors include her brother Jack Mitchell and sister-in-law Susan; sister Rubye Scott; sister-in-law Marlene Mitchell; nieces and nephews: Curtis Mitchell, Michael Mitchell, Chris Mitchell, Kim Scott, Patricia Williams, Teresa Mitchell, Jennifer Mitchell, Brenda Tomaszewski, and Betsy Bullard. 

The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 3, 2024 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Abingdon United Methodist Church. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 pm, on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Abingdon United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Seay officiating.
