Rick Van Kiser, 67, of Harrisonburg died on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at home after an 11-year battle with cancer. Rick was born November 27, 1956 to the late Raymond and Doris (Charlton) Kiser.
Rick enjoyed hunting, racing in autocross, cooking delicious breakfasts, visiting the Outer Banks, and watching sports. He was a graduate of James Madison University, where he attained All-American honors as a member of the archery team. Rick continued to be a loyal supporter of all Dukes athletic teams for the entirety of his life.
Rick was a born entrepreneur, operating an archery shop, Buckhorn Archery, prior to founding Harrisonburg Construction, the company he ran for more than 30 years. Many buildings his company built or remodeled in the Harrisonburg area–especially those on the JMU campus–are a memorial to the pride and care Rick took in his work.
On December 19, 1981, Rick married Elizabeth Ann (Horne) Kiser, who survives. Rick is also survived by his son Christopher Kiser and wife Heather; his daughter Jennifer Kiser; his brother Kim Kiser and wife Frances, sister Lisa Dunlap and husband Bobby, and brother Terry Kiser and wife Kim; his mother-in-law Gloria Horne; his sister-in-law Brenda Morrow and husband Rick; his grandchildren Iris, Aurora, and Miles Kiser; and two grand-dogs, Duke and Dutchess.
A memorial service for Rick will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at Montezuma Church of the Brethren.
