Robert “Bert” William Nickels, age 53, of Gulfport, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2025.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Gene and Jackie Nickels, and brother, Donnie Johnson.
Rob is survived by his ex-wife, Andrea Boney Nickels Ackerman; his son, Kyle (Heather) Nickels; and two grandchildren, Mason and Emily Nickels of Prattville, Alabama; his brothers Gene “Ed” (Raquel) Nickels, nephew Garrett Nickels, Jimmy (Diane) Johnson, Michael “Mickey” Nickels, niece (Gracie), David Nickels of Berlin, Germany, his sisters, Brenda (Peter) Blake, Joan (Wayne) Morris and Jean Currie, and nieces and nephews.
Rob’s lifelong dedication was to his family which he loved dearly. In his younger days, Rob enjoyed spending time at his family’s camp in Leaf River., where he spent days floating the river with his family and friends and sitting around the campfire. Rob had a passion for fishing, his happy place was out by the water, with the quiet serenity of nature surrounding him. It wasn’t just about catching fish; it was about the experience, the peace, the patience, and the connection to something timeless. He could spend hours casting his line, appreciating the stillness and beauty of the world around him. Fishing was where he found balance, where life’s worries seemed to drift away with the current.
And then there were the dogs. Oh, how Rob loved his dogs. They were more than pets; they were family, his constant companions who brought endless joy to his life. Rob had a special bond with each of them, a connection that only someone with a truly kind and nurturing soul could have. His dogs were always by his side, whether he was relaxing at home, working on a project, or out by the water. He cared for them deeply, treating them with the same love and respect he gave to everyone in his life. His love for dogs was one of the many ways he showed his gentle, caring spirit—providing them not only a home but also a piece of his heart. To Rob, the loyalty and love of a dog were unmatched, and he returned that love tenfold.
As we say goodbye to Rob, let us remember the legacy he leaves behind. It’s a legacy of love and kindness. Let us carry forward his love of the simple joys of a fishing trip, a quiet moment spent making something with care, the unconditional love of a dog, and the warmth of a shared smile. Though he is no longer with us in body, Rob will live on in every story we tell, every memory we cherish, and every moment we try to live as he did—with a full heart and a kind soul.
A memorial will be held at a later date and time.
