Samuel Jasper Talbot was reunited with Martha and said hello to Jesus in person on November 19th. Following a private family burial, a memorial service to celebrate his life well lived will be at First Baptist Church on Monday November 22nd at 3 pm. Following the service the family will gather in the church foyer for visitation.
Sam was born October 18th, 1928 to Claud and Mabel Talbot in Shreveport, LA. He attended Line Ave School, Byrd High School, Wentworth Military Academy, Centenary College and on to Ouachita Baptist University where he met the love of his life, Martha Muncy. He fought in the Korean War while they dated and they were married on August 22, 1953. The two then continued their education at University of Oklahoma where he received a degree in Geology. Shreveport became their home in 1954 when he began his lifelong career following his dad's path in the oil business. They had 2 daughters, Nora Sue and Jennifer Lynn.
Sam, or Sambo as many knew him after he had grandchildren, had a fabulous gift of hospitality. He never met a stranger. He and Martha loved to entertain family and friends regularly. He was a blessing to his children's and grandchildren's friends and made them all feel so included and special. Travel was one of their all time favorite things to do. Sam and Martha traveled the world extensively and made friends everywhere they went. Although their most cherished place was their time spent at their home in Pensacola Beach for many, many years.
First Baptist Church was his church home from the cradle roll to the grave. He was a deacon there and was involved in many ministries including working with youth and college students and serving on numerous committees including the Church School Board. Other outlets of his giving back included the Kiwanis Club where he was a 50 + year member and loved helping with the annual Pancake Breakfast, the Salvation Army, and the Boys and Girls Club. Also he was member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, the Geological Society, the Cotillion Club, Royal Order of Jesters and the Demoiselle Club, in addition to other civic organizations through the years.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his sister Lynn Miller of Austin, TX and is survived by his daughters Susie and husband Mike Tingle, and Jenny and husband Brian Flournoy. His grandchildren include Nora Greer, Rebekah Gura and husband Dave, Martha Tingle, Alex Flournoy, Tallie Mabray and husband Wilson, Camille Flournoy and Russell Flournoy. He was also blessed with 8 great grandchildren – Haley, Grace, Sam and Nora Kate Greer, Avery and Georgia Gura, and Patton and Nena Mabray. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. They loved their many years of Muncy/Talbot family reunions at Lake Ouachita where he taught them all how to water ski.
The family would like to say a special thanks to Karen Demery for her years of dedicated service to the family and also the staff at The Oaks of Louisiana North Pavilion and Regional Hospice who loved him well through this time.
The family requests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church, the Salvation Army or to the charity of your choice. The service will be livestreamed on Jenny's Facebook for those unable to attend.
