WINSTED –
SOBOL – Walter S. Sobol, Jr., 86, passed away on Thanksgiving morning, November 24, after a brief illness. He was the loving
husband of Katherine (Lambert) Sobol for 62 years. Born April 29, 1936 in Winsted; the son of the late Walter S. Sobol, Sr., and Sophie (Koval) Sobol.
Walter attended local schools and graduated from Gilbert High School. He then served in the CT National Guard and the U.S. Air Force, as an airborne radio operator while on overseas duty.
He worked for Timex Corp, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, Hudson Wire, Danfield Thread and Hitchcock Chair. In his retirement, he also worked at Winn's Deli.
He volunteered for Winsted Volunteer Fire Department, Engine #1 for many years. He belonged to St. James Episcopal Church in Winsted. He also enjoyed having breakfasts with retired vet friends at McDonald's
in Winsted.
Walter enjoyed playing cards especially skat or 31, horseshoes and roller skating, where he met his wife. He was an excellent and very competitive bowler. He loved fishing, dancing, music of all kinds, camping and traveling with family. They had a special annual trip every Thanksgiving to Bentley Brook in MA.
In addition to his wife, he leaves his children, Cheryl (Michael) Deane and Mark Sobol of Winsted and Patricia Daveluy of
Torrington; 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marianne Sobol of Winsted; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Helen Lekang, Jenny Juzwik and Edward Sobol.
There will be no calling hours. Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main Street, Winsted has care of the arrangements.
A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 11, 2022 at 1 pm at St James Episcopal Church, Main Street, Winsted.
Burial will be at the discretion of the family at Forest View Cemetary.
