Richard Aghababian Obituary

Published by Chiampa Funeral Home on Oct. 1, 2014.
Richard V. Aghababian MD, of Southborough, died at home on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 with his family gathered by his side. He was 66. Born in Boston on July 7, 1948 he was a son of the late Vahe and Zarie (Arslanian) Aghababian and was raised in Newton. A graduate of Newton South High School, class of 1966, he graduated from Harvard College in 1970 and was then a member of the first class of the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester in 1974. He married Ann E. Bachini on August 13, 1972 at St. Stephen Armenian Apostolic Church in Watertown. Dr. Aghababian was the Founding Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center. His commitment to healing patients and educating physicians interlaced his varied interests: emergency medicine, disaster medicine, medical education abroad, and continuing education for physicians at home. He was a Professor of Emergency Medicine and retired Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education at UMass, Past Commander of MA-2 Disaster Medical Assistance Team, Past President of the American College of Emergency Physicians, and Past President of the Massachusetts Medical Society. In addition to his work in the medical field, he also enjoyed the beaches and golf on Cape Cod. However, times spent with his family, either at home or on the many vacations they took around the world, were his most cherished moments. In addition to his wife of 42 years, Ann, he leaves his children, Emily A. Groccia and her husband, Michael, of Grafton who await the birth of Richard's first grandchild, and his son, Andrew M. Aghababian of Newburyport. He is also survived by his siblings, Robert Aghababian and his wife, Sandra, of Lexington, Alice Hagopian and her husband, Mark, of Eastham, and Victoria Wicks and her husband, Bruce, of Charlestown, Rhode Island, and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends will honor and remember Richard's life by gathering for calling hours at Heald & Chiampa Funeral Directors ~ The Sumner House, 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury Center on Monday, October 6th from 3 to 7 p.m. His Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 7th in The Armenian Church of the Holy Translators, 38 Franklin Street, Framingham at 11 am. Rev. Fr. Krikor A. Sabounjian will officiate. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery, Southborough. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be directed to the Richard V. Aghababian MD Fellowship at the UMass Memorial Foundation (UMMF) and mailed to UMass Medicine Development Office, 333 South Street, Shrewsbury, MA 01545.

Dicky was the best cousin! He took us faithfully to the Watertown Gaidzag AYF meetings as well as coached us in our athletic endeavors! Loved Uncle Vahe and Auntie Zari, my godparents, with whom I shared a special relationship over the years.

It saddens me to hear of a classmate passing, especially one with whom I was friendly with since time immemorial (from elementary school). Richard was a good person back then and I have nothing but fond memories of that time.

My deepest condolences to the family,

Dear Ann,
I only recently heard of Dicks' passing and am deeply saddened and sorry for your loss. I knew him through the Society and he accompanied me to Saudi a few years ago to accredit a hospital in Riyadh. He spoke of his coins, his wine and his deepest affection for family. He will be missed by many...a tribute to a life well spent.

It is deep sadness that sharing this news with colleagues. Dr. Aghababian was one of a small group of teachers that enforced , with reverence and wit , the success and hence legitimacy of the initial Northeastern U.C. Paramedic program . He will be missed by many , though his work will continue to affect so many more .

I had the pleasure of working with Dick as a new graduate nurse and he was a young intern at Mt Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. We became fast friends and relied on each other in this new beginning as nurse and Doctor. He was always respectful and listened to what you had to say even if it was 2AM.
He sought me out to be the Nurse Manager of a freestanding Walk In center he opened in Watertown in 1985. He had endless energy. I am so sad that his life was cut so short but he definitely made many contributions to Healthcare over the last 40 years.
My sincere sympathy to Ann and family.
Lastly, the pictures brought back so many memories especially the picture of his Residency group at Mt Auburn.....those were some great times.

There were so many holidays and events that our families celebrated together, and Dick's sense of humor was always present from even the youngest of ages. Auntie Zarie and Uncle Vahe were very special to me, as my God-Parents, they played an important part in my life. I remember when at age 12, Uncle Vahe said that now I was going to be part of starting up the Watertown AYF Juniors, while Dick was part of the Seniors. So off we would go to the ARF Club in Watertown, and Dickie used to coach me on how to be a good leader. But most importantly, Dick was a brilliant, wonderful man, who gave so much of his knowledge to help others, and I am honored to have known him and to be part of the Aghababian clan. He will be sorely missed by all, but he will live on by all that he imparted and taught us in his lifetime.

On behalf of my family we extend our condolences to Ann and all of the Aghababian family that were great friends of my father and mother. My Dad, Coach Kojoyian is deeply saddened to hear of Richards passing. Coach and I feel honored that Dick made the effort to come out one evening this past June to attend a get together in Newton with all of Coach's old ball players and wrestlers from Newton South. Coach was elated to see Dick yet very sad to hear of his prognosis, yet we were all fortunate to chat with Dick one more time that evening. Dick was a star center on the fantastic Newton South football team that was 8-1 the Fall of 1965 and belonged to the tightest knit best team and most dedicated guys that I have ever seen my Dad coach in 63 years. He was a tremendous person and our prayers are with you all.

Ann, I was saddened to hear of Dick's passing. As you know, I knew Dick primarily through our work together at the American College of Emergency Physicians but also with the AMA and the New England State Medical Societies. Dick was a leader and a mentor and a friend. In the world of Emergency Medicine he leaves behind a rich legacy of memories and achievements, and lots of people that he inspired. He will be missed. My sympathies to you and your family.

On behalf of the Harvard Class of 1970 and the guys in Kirkland House, I would like to offer my condolences to Ann and the Aghababian familly. Dick was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. He was hard working, unassuming and dedicated to those around him. Many people have obviously been touched by him through the years. Those of us who knew him during his Harvard years will have fond memories of him. We will miss him.
