Terry Evan Steadham
68, a fine artist with works in the permanent collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art and other venues across the country, died April 23 in the city. A native of Indianapolis, Mr. Steadham graduated with a B.F.A. degree from the John Herron School of Art, now a part of Indiana University. After serving as an artist-in-residence at a Northern Indiana high school and lecturing at Herron, Indiana University, and Purdue University, he moved to New York City, where he lived, worked and exhibited for thirteen years. During his first few years in New York, he thrived as an illustrator, doing books covers for Random House Publishing, album covers for RCA Records, and editorial illustrations for such periodicals as Psychology Today and Sports Illustrated. His work was republished in several successive years of the Illustrators Annual and appeared in the New York Society of Illustrators' exhibition 200 Years of American Art. He gave up his illustration career to work full-time as a studio artist, specializing in paintings and drawings that grew out of late abstract expressionism, employing a language of subtle colors and geometric shapes composed in tension with each other. In New York, his work appeared at the A.I.R. Gallery, the Allen Stone Gallery, Craig Cornelius Gallery, Kwok Gallery, Pamela Adler Gallery, Public Image Gallery, Old P.S. 64, The Queens Museum of Art, and the Soho Center for Visual Art. Outside of New York, he also exhibited at Austin Peay University in Clarksville, TN; Davidson College in Davidson, NC; D.W. Gallery in Dallas, TX; Elmira College in Elmira, NY; the J.B. Speed Museum of Art in Louisville, KY; the Johnson/Whitney Gallery in New Orleans, LA; the Karr Fine Arts Center of the New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury, Long Island, NY; Kay Garvey Gallery in Chicago, IL; and the Kit Basquin Gallery in Milwaukee, WI. His pieces are also included in private collections in California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Toronto, Canada. At the time of his death, he was represented locally by Jacksson Contemporary Art in Columbus, IN. As an amateur athlete, Mr. Steadham completed the Boston Marathon and the Baltimore Marathon, as well as the New York City Marathon a dozen years in a row. As an amateur astronomer, he was a member of the Indiana Astronomical Society, hand made some of his own telescope equipment and regularly attended "star parties" (several-day-long campouts for up to thousands of astronomers) in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Nebraska, and Texas. On top of all these examples of his considerable talents, those who knew and loved him saw him as an inspiring, kind, gentle and thoughtful soul who will be fondly remembered and greatly missed. Mr. Steadham is survived by his daughter Ann Steadham-Ray and his granddaughter, Calisto, both of Colfax, CA; by his twin brother Jerry of Indianapolis and by three former wives. The family will schedule a service celebrating his life in the coming weeks. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Arrangements made by Little and Sons Funeral Home.

As the spring flowers bloom, I remember Terry with great fondness. It is comforting to know that our love for him will go on and on. There are so many things that Terry said that bring me comfort. One that I often think of is "be in the world but not of it". His wonderful spirit and the impact he made goes on.

I didn't know sooner...my deepest sympathy to Terry's daughter and to Jerry. Although time always seperated us, it was always nice to talk to him at least once a year to catch up. We had many wonderful adventures. I loved him very much! I will talk to you Terry on each starry night...rest well! Anita

For a time in my early art developing years in Indy, I had the great fortune to meet Terry Steadham and George Sears: two of the kindest souls I've ever met. We three ran together, drew together, laughed together, complained and at times cried together. I marveled at George's cartoons but Terry was my art mentor. I used to always ask Terry why he put squiggles in his illustrations or paintings and he would always say "because they belong there". It took me a long time to understand what he meant. Now when asked the same question about my art...well you know how I answer.
Among many things, Terry taught me to have a reverence for my artwork. Anyone who saw Terry handling his art knows what I'm talking about. To Terry, his art was not just something on a scrap of paper, illustration board or canvas but something precious on a scrap of paper, illustration board or canvas. Like him, his art was precious and it's no wonder he got called up to the Bigs - New York, early on. They saw in him what we all saw.
A lot of what Terry taught me about valuing my art, I now pass on to my students here in Canada and I thank him for that. I will only miss seeing him but I will not miss Terry because he is a big part of me.
With love and respect,
Clarence Porter

I knew Terry in NYC in the 80's. We trained together for the NY Marathon for 4 or 5 years. We both resided on the Bowery and made the most of the life there. A tedious man, he brought out the intricacies of doing things correctly. A trait of his I will embrace infinitely.
good work my friend.

Terry was the greatest friend and companion anyone could have, and we shared many adventures. He took risks in his life in order to fulfill his dreams. To be successful to him was to be happy living simply, and at peace, whether viewing the stars and planets with one of his telescopes or creating a work of art. Terry taught young artists by example how to live an artist's life. He was the kindest, most generous person I have ever known.

Terry and I were classmates at Herron. And although I was unaware of his accomplishments, I am happy, but not surprised he made a career in the art field. My sympathies are with his family. Terri Schneider
