Dr. Brown 84, formerly of Memphis, Tennessee, of Brenham, Texas, passed away on Monday, June 11, 2018, at his son and daughter-in-law's ranch in Independence, Texas. Cremation services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers, Bryan-College Station.

Dr. Paul Brown was born to Paul Revere Brown, Sr. and Martha Keltner Brown in Memphis, Tennessee. He attended Bethel Grove Elementary School, Fairview Junior High School, and Messick High School. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He participated in glee club, ROTC, and was a two year letterman as a center and middle linebacker on the football team. He graduated in the Class of 1951. He was offered an athletic scholarship too play football at Vanderbilt University but chose instead to enroll in the Pre-Dental program at Memphis State College. After completion of his undergraduate work, Paul earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Tennessee at Memphis.

After dental school, Dr. Brown accepted a commission in the United States Army, serving four years active duty at Fort Gordon, Georgia. Subsequently, he served his country in the United States Army Reserves for thirty years, promoted to, commanding as, and retiring at the rank of Colonel. He returned to Memphis in 1959 and opened his dental office at 4515 Poplar Avenue. Where he practiced until 2010, boasting that he had never taken a sick day.

Paul was a devoted father and husband, enthusiastically involved in his children's schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and hobbies. Paul "Doc" Brown's zest for life, wide-ranging interests, and community involvement were well known. He was a watercolorist and oil painter of note, a carver, woodworker, boat-builder, and jewelry maker. He was an active member of Colonial Baptist and Germantown Baptist Churches, serving as a youth basketball and baseball coach, singing in the choir, and teaching Sunday school. He coached and was a director of AAU/Junior Olympic basketball at the East Memphis YMCA; also, serving on the Board of Directors of the East Memphis YMCA. He was a TSSAA football official for many years. He spent a lifetime afield and afloat in hunting and fishing pursuits. Waterfowling across North America, but most often in the flooded timber of Arkansas; and, fishing anywhere, anytime, and for anything that would bite. He was a long-time member of the Toothpick Dinner Club, Ducks Unlimited, and Delta Waterfowl. In retirement, Paul enjoyed working on his son's sheep and goat ranch and alongside his daughter-in-law in her wool mill.

The legacy Paul left behind is one of love. Love for the Lord, love for his family, and love for others. It truly defined who he was at his very core. He passed that love on through his daily interactions with others and most often left them smiling at a kind word or a corny joke. The seeds of kindness and encouragement were sown every day of his life and he will be sorely missed. The fruit of God's spirit-love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control were evident in the things he said and the things he did to serve others. It was a blessing to have had the chance to know him and love him. What he would want for us to do now is to be loving and kind each and every day.

His parents Paul and Martha, both precede him in death.

Dr. Paul Brown (Colonel Retired USA Army Reserves) is survived by his wife of 63 years Henrietta Nowell Brown of Memphis; his son Paul and wife Dr. Dawn Brown of Brenham, Texas; his daughter Bebe Brown Ray and husband Dr. Roger Ray of Florence, Alabama; his granddaughter Jennifer Ray of Nashville, Tennessee.
