MARTHA MAXSON Obituary

Martha L. Maxson, born March 22, 1946, in Rochelle, Illinois, died peacefully in her home in Wheeling, Illinois, on April 13, 2021. Martha, whom friends and family called Martie, was the daughter of Ernest Delos (Cracker) and Florence Maxson. Martha graduated from Rochelle Township High School in 1964 and went on to get a B.S. in Physical Education from Western Illinois University in 1969, a master's in Physical Education and Health from Northern Illinois University in 1978, an English Teaching Certification from DePaul University in 1988, and an additional 60 master credit hours in an At Risk Student Curriculum from St. Xavier University in 1993. Before starting her career as a teacher, Martha saw the world as a flight attendant for United Airlines, where she discovered her passion for travel and world culture. She found a particular love for Paris, a place she visited often throughout her life. She shared this love with her friends and family and introduced them to French culture. Martha began her teaching career in the Chicago Public Schools. She ultimately had a long career at Buffalo Grove High School where over the years she taught PE and Health, and coached swimming, volleyball, gymnastics, and her favorite, dance. She was the director of the Orchesis Performance Company for several years. She taught hundreds of students and instilled in them a passion for performing, something at which she excelled. She also shared that enthusiasm with her nieces and nephew. After her retirement in 2005, Martha continued to share her love of educating and inspiring students by teaching homebound high school students until 2017. Martha's busy teaching career never kept her from pursuing other interests. She modeled and was featured in many ads and commercials, including one for Canon Camera. She loved playing the piano, swimming, reading, shopping and going to movies with friends, and working Chicago Tribune crossword puzzles. Martha had a zeal for everything she did. She always lit up a room and was a force of nature wherever she was. Her family and friends will remember her fire for life and vibrant spirit. Martha was very active in both her personal and social life and continued to be until Alzheimer's dementia began to rob her of the ability to do the things she loved. She will be so missed by her many friends and family. She is survived by her friend and love, James Bernardi; sister, Susan Anderson (Donald Metzger); brother, Joel (Karan) Maxson; nieces, Olivia Metzger (Alexander Dennis) and Sarah Maxson; nephew, Harrison Metzger; three great-nephews; and many cousins and friends. Plans for a memorial service for family and close friends are pending. Memorial Contributions can be made to a fund in Martha's name aiding at-risk students at Buffalo Grove High School. Donations can be made via check (please put "Maxson Fund" in the memo line) and written out to the D214 Education Foundation, mailed to the Foundation at 2121 S. Goebbert Road in Arlington Heights, 60005. Donations also can be made by credit card directly to the fund online at this link: district214educationfoundation.salsalabs.org/maxsonfund.

Marti was our next door neighbor in Des Plaines when she roomed with Kay and was a flight attendant. Gary and I had just married, so we welcomed the connection with our two neighbors.Marti was growing weary of of flying and queried me about teaching . At the time I was employed by
District 214. Our talks inspired her to change direction and pursue teaching. The rest is history. We stayed in touch for many years after both of us moved on. She was a great friend. I miss her smile and her optimism.

Marti was my teacher, my mentor, and later my colleague and friend as well. As the director of Orchesis, she influenced so many lives, including mine and my sister Kristin's. She lived life to the fullest and inspired others to strive for excellence. I will never forget when she came to visit me in Denver. I am deeply saddened that she is not with us anymore, but she certainly accomplished more and touched more lives than most people in her time on this planet. May you rest in peace, dear friend.

Martie and I shared many special students in health education for many years. I appreciate her family’s recognition of Buffalo Grove’s finest in her memory. She was truly a beautiful dancer.

Ms. Maxon was my gymnastic teacher at Buffalo Grove HS and Orchesis teacher. She was an amazing coach and person who always pushed you to your abilities, was always understanding and kind.
Great memories! So sorry to hear of her passing. My heart and prayers go out to her family and friends.

Gary and I were neighbors of Martie And Kay in the Trace apartments on Des Plaines when we were first married. That was over 52 years ago when Martie was still a flight attendant. I was partly responsible for encouraging Martie to enter teaching as she was growing disenchanted with flying. We kept in touch for many years sharing stories of our lives and the births of my daughters. Never once did we hear any words other than those of optimism and enthusiasm. She was a dynamo in every phase of her life. So sorry we lost touch, so the news of her death from Alzheimer´s is crushing. Hope those who were still close to her find comfort in the fact that she was a motivating force for her students and a spark of light in a sometimes dark world.

She was a terrific swimming coach to us at BGHS. She expected a lot from her team, inspiring excellence and teaching us the value of hard work. She was one of the many positive female role models I was privileged to encounter at BGHS.

Martie was such a big part of my childhood, along with her sister and brother. I'll never forget how excited we were when she apoeared on a TV game show. I think it was Password. I will always remember her as independent, adventurous and fun. My prayers for her and the whole family.

Although Willow and I only knew Martha for a short time, she and Willow bonded and were fast friends. Willow looked for her every time we were out for a walk. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and Jim during this difficult time.
