BETTY BAKER Obituary
Betty Martin Baker, 70 of Gainesville, Florida died Sunday, June 24, 2018. A native of Chattahoochee, Florida she was a 1965 graduate of Carter Paramore High School, she received her Bachelor of Art degree in Criminology/ Psychology and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Baruch College in New York and a M.Ed. with a concentration in Organizational Development from Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Betty was an employee of Alachua County as the County Manager and Chief of Staff to the City Manager of Gainesville until April 2018.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, June 28, 2018 10:00 A.M. at Campus Church of Christ, 2720 SW Second Avenue, Gainesville, Florida.
Flowers may be delivered to the church at 8:30 A.M. until 9:30 A.M.
Gail & Wynn's Mortuary, Inc., 1300 Bruton Boulevard, Orlando, Florida is in charge of all arrangements.

I followed her career in admiration as she marked the history books to become the first African -American Woman to serve as County Manager. I worked for Betty in the City of Cincinnati Human Resources Department for several years. I was saddened to learn of her passing. I remember we talked a lot about our grandsons.

Dear family, another light was extinguished when Betty slipped away from this earthly world. She was a trailblazer and her accomplishments are a testament to this. I had the pleasure of working with and for Betty when she served as the City Manager's Executive Chief of Staff and I served as the City Manager's Office Coordinator, up until December 2017. I admired Betty as she was a constant professional who had the upmost respect of all who worked with and for her. I extend my sincere condolences to her family.

I knew Betty when she lived & worked in Cincinnati,OH. She was a kind hearted and humble person. Always willing to help wherever she could. We both attended Xavier University and completed the same Masters program. Because she completed a year before me, she mentored me until I finished the program. I will always remember the help she provided me. May God comfort the family and friends she leaves behind.

I met Ms. Baker in 2004 when I started working in Human Resources and she was my director under Admin Services. She always shared her knowledge and wisdom with me and kept in contact with me after she left the County. I will miss her greatly!!

I first met Betty in 2010 when she was the Administrative Services Director for Alachua County, and I was working for a short time with Randy Reid the County Administrator. I was blessed to be able to renew our association when she and I came to work for the City of Gainesville in 2015. Betty's professionalism and knowledge of local government will always stand out in my mind. Her passing is a loss to the community, and will be keenly felt by everyone who knew her well.

Several of us at Gainesville Fire Rescue worked with Betty during her service at the City of Gainesville. She was a true professional and such a joy to work with. We will miss her greatly.
