Grant Gordon Obituary

Grant Scott Gordon 28, passed away August 25, 2014, in Houston, TX. Grant is survived by his mother, Harriet Berlin Choice and her husband William Choice, his father Paul Michael Gordon, sister Devin Tomiak and her husband Matthew Tomiak and their son John Matthew Tomiak, and brother Forrest Gordon. Additionally, he is survived by his grandmother Marie Berlin of Montgomery, AL, and grandmother Rose Gordon of Houston, TX.
Grant is a graduate of Memorial High School in Houston, TX, and the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. His career started in Napa, California at La Toque and continued in New York City where he was part of a team that earned a coveted three-star rating from the New York Times at Cafe Boulud. From there he moved to the two-star Michelin restaurant Cyrus in Healdsburg, CA.
Upon his return to Houston in 2009, Grant accepted a position at Tony's where he rose through the ranks to the Executive Chef position and earned a four star ranking from Chronicle critic Alison Cook. And later, expanded his role with Tony's by taking on a partnership, development, and the opening of Vallone's in West Houston.
Grant's goal was to open his first restaurant by the time he was 30. He was on course to accomplish that goal with The Edmont, a new restaurant Grant and his partners were designing from the ground up to reflect Grant's vision for fine dining in Houston.
Grant won his first award as a senior in high school- the Annual Chile Cookoff. At 26, Grant was named to Forbes List of 30 Under 30. In 2012, he was a semi finalist for the James Beard "Rising Star Chef" award. This year he traveled to the Philippines as a U.S. State Department Culinary Ambassador.
Grant's success at such a young age can be attributed to his passion, drive, focus, talent, and sheer likability. He was adored by his family and friends for his infectious laugh, witty sense of humor, sweet disposition, and humble character.
His interests were varied from golf to movies but most important to Grant was time spent with family and friends.
His loss will be felt by many. We will never again be whole without him.
The funeral will be held Thursday, August 28th at 1pm in the sanctuary at Congregation Beth Israel, 5600 N Braeswood Blvd. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

My son and his wife, Ben and Brianne Holt, attended school with Grant at the Culinary Institute, and we remember the joy of meeting him when we visited there. Ben and Brianne have told us several stories of fond memories of Grant: the many class study sessions and dining delights, as well as a memorable rap music competition. A dynamic and gracious soul, Grant! May loving memories comfort you!
