Dean Maar Obituary

Dean Carl Maar, M.D.

Indianapolis - Dr. Dean Maar was a loving and committed husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Deborah, his children, Emily, Megan and Sarah, his father, Clyde, and his siblings: Wayne (Sharon), Janet (Tim) and Gary (Kandi).

Dean was an alumnus of DePauw University and Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed fellowships in adult reconstructive hip and knee surgery at Johns Hopkins University and Ilizarov Reconstruction at the University of Maryland. His manuscripts were published in medical periodicals including Orthopedics, The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and The Journal of Arthroplasty. He presented at national and international medical conferences and served as the assistant editor for The Journal of Arthroplasty from 1991 to 1999. He was a cornerstone at OthoIndy, a prominent orthopedic medical group. He served as Vice-President of its Board of Directors and was instrumental in building the renowned OrthoIndy Trauma Program. He invented a surgical device which was patented and is used by surgeons worldwide. Indianapolis Monthly recognized him as a "Top Doctor" for the past 6 years.

He spent the bulk of his career treating accident victims with serious injuries in emergency rooms. Dean saved countless lives and limbs by making decisions and acting upon them under intense pressure and with little time for reflection. His calm and kind demeanor brought comfort to and inspired confidence in his patients and their loved ones. His passion and commitment earned him admiration and respect from his colleagues, nurses, staff and patients.

Dean lived life in the present. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and naturalist. He spent much of his free time creating a retreat which he enjoyed sharing with his family and friends. The cabin was full of souvenirs and trophies from his adventures all over the world. The property is covered with thousands of trees he planted with help of family and friends. He took great pleasure in entertaining at his retreat and sharing it with his extended family, friends and groups. Many children caught their first fish and learned to canoe and kayak at "Uncle Dean's Cabin". His cabin parties often included campfires visible from outer space, grilled food sufficient to feed small armies and professional grade fireworks. He created life-long memories for his children and his nieces and nephews.

Dean treasured his time with his wife and daughters. He enjoyed much professional success and accolades, but his family was always his first priority. At home, his family enjoyed his complete attention. He was patient and easy going. He loved to make his family laugh even if the humor was at his expense. He supported his daughters in all their endeavors with the same focus, commitment and compassion which made him a great doctor. He did not waste time at events hiding at his table. When the music started, he was on the dance floor with his wife and daughters.

Dean was a thoughtful man who was an avid reader with broad range of interests. He followed current events and relished conversation with people from different backgrounds and disciplines. He played the guitar, operated and serviced heavy machinery and enjoyed cooking. His life was full of discovery, learning and real experiences.

Dr. Maar died defending his family from an act of senseless violence on November 27, 2019. His final decision in this life exemplifies his character. While preparing to host a large Thanksgiving dinner with his extended family, he was the victim of a home invasion. He confronted the armed attackers and sacrificed his life to save the Love of His Life. A Celebration of Dean's life will be held 4-8 p.m., on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at Crown Hill Funeral Home, Indianapolis, IN 46208. A private burial will take place at Crown Hill Cemetery.

February 2016 I had a traumatic fall breaking my lemur. I was transported 60 miles to Indinapolis. I am extremely lucky Dr. Maar was on call. It was a Saturday afternoon. I believe God had a hand in him being there to help me. My leg completely healed. Dr. Maar will be missed by all.

Dr. Marr @ Methodist Hospital was God sent to me and my family. On November 8th 1997 I was involved in a serious MVA, and I had to be air lifted by Lifeline (Methodist Hospital). Dr. Marr consoled my family and friends during my induced coma and surgical operations. I firmly believe that if it wasn't for him that night, I would not be here today. It saddens my heart to just now learn of his passing. I pray for all of his family and friends, and again praise God for his help! God bless you all.

To the Maar family, I have just learned of Dean's tragic death. I joined OthoIndy in the summer of 1993 and was with the group until retiring from practice in 2006. I am unable to express my sorrow for your loss. Dean added value to the life of everyone who knew him.

Dr. Maar was my first boss out of school. He was a great mentor and brilliant surgeon. He truly was a nice surgeon in and out of the operating room which is rare. When all other could not figure out a solution he could. He loved his work and cared for his patients. He was a go to guy when you had an issue and he would go out of his way to help. Really a loss to the world.

My wife and I just learned of the untimely death of Dr. Marr. I first met him when I had knee replacement in 2013. Since that time, I have had the other knee and both hips replaced by Dr. Marr. He replaced my wife's knee 2 years ago. I was always impressed that he took time to answer any questions, and never rushed an an office visit until he was satisfied I had a full understanding of the treatment and alternatives.
He had an easygoing manner, and he truly loved his patients.
He will be greatly missed by our family. We certainly want to extend our condolences to the family. May the Good Lord comfort the family and staff during this difficult time.

In 2004 my son was in a car accident that injured his hip, had a compound fractured femur and a foot that had multiple breaks. Dr said it was comparable to what is seen in Indy Car racing. He was flown to Methodist where we soon met Dr Maar. He introduced himself as "the bone guy". Short story is he saved my son's future with the skilled work he did on him. He has been able to work and live a normal life because of "the bone guy". We are shocked and saddened by the loss of such a wonderful person. Our family will forever be grateful for him. Our prayers go out to all involved.

I met Dr Maar in the ER at Methodist Hospital. He was the only doctor that I've ever met wherein I had no fear of surgery. Somehow, he was able to put me at ease and trust him. Dr Maar and his staff were truly angels in disguise throughout my stay at Methodist. Thanks.

I am so truly saddened that Dr Maar was taken from so many that loved him! Dr. Maar did my THR in 2017 and saved my leg! I just saw Dr. Maar two weeks ago due to issues with my other hip and to reevaluate issues with bone necrosis. Dr. Maar and Nurse Amy always provided excellent care and kindness! I am devastated after hearing this today! Dr. Maar was an amazing surgeon and had a wonderful bedside manner; you don't see many like him anymore. Dr. Maar was blessed with his gifted Hands as surgeon and his smile helped you forget about the pain you were in, his smile always seemed to make me feel better! I will miss him as a doctor I trusted and his wonderful smile! My deepest sympathy to Dr. Maar's family

I had the privilege of working with Dr Maar over the years as an OR nurse at Methodist. He was a gifted and compassionate surgeon and one of the very best. Dr Maar had a great sense of humor and was not one to yell or throw a fit unlike some other surgeons (they know who they are!). I was always impressed by his dance moves back when the entire MH OR had one big Christmas party. I feel so grateful to have known this wonderful man. My heart goes out to the Maar family at this difficult time. Prayers for strength and peace to all of you. Remember, you will see him again one day❤

My heart is broken over the loss of such a great man and surgeon.
Dr Marr did 3 surgeries on the same knee for various reasons and every time I had 100% faith that they would be successful surgeries.
Things like this makes no sense at all and there is nothing I can say to comfort the family. Just always know that your husband and father lived a life that not many of us can say we did. He served an uncountable number of patients but most of all he gave you all that he had. I will continue to pray for you during this difficult time.

Dr. Maar was a tremendous Dr. And man. He was an intricate part in saving my son's right leg after he was hit by a drunk driver. Dr. Maar always made my son laugh and was very diligent in his care. We will always be thankful for Dr. Maar and his excellent care for my son. If it weren't for Dr. Maar my son would've probably lost his leg at age 16. God bless his family during the horrible time. I am still in shock of this loss. Dr. Maar was such a great person and honestly one of the nicest doctors. I had the opportunity to work with him for almost 10 years and I loved everyday Amy and Dr. Maar were in the office. The two of them together made us all laugh and lighten our day. Dr. Maar was always the first one to donate money whenever we would adopt a family at the holiday time, and he always said thank you to the staff before he left. The conversations between Dr. Maar and Dr. Kaehr were the best. Hearing the stories of the two of them on their hunting trips were always interesting.
