Carolyn Joy Powell, 77, of Pasadena went to be with her Lord on Thursday, December 22, 2011. She was an amazing wife, mother, sister and grandmother. Carolyn was born August 5, 1934, in Picayune, Mississippi to Oscar and Ruby Stewart. Carolyn graduated from University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelor's degree and from the University of Houston with a Master's degree prior to beginning her career in teaching. She served the children of the Pasadena Independent School District for 30 years. Carolyn married her beloved husband, Hollis Dwain Powell on December 21, 1958, and they shared 53 wonderful years together. They spent their time working in the school district, raising their children, and serving the Lord by helping others. Carolyn was a faithful member of Richey Street Baptist Church and later Memorial Baptist Church in Pasadena, Texas, serving as a Sunday School teacher many of those years. She was a devout Christian woman who shared God's word and worked to see others become believers and followers of Christ. She is survived by her husband, Hollis Dwain Powell of Pasadena; her four children, son Mark Powell and wife Anh, daughter Shelly Bunt and husband Don, son Brent Powell and wife Laurie, and son Lance Powell and wife DeeAnn, her brothers Mickey Stewart and wife, Betty, and Keith Stewart and wife Charlotte, eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation will be Monday, December 26, 2011 from 6PM to 8PM at Grand View Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at 10AM at Grand View Funeral Home. Graveside Services will follow at 4PM at Weeks Chapel Cemetery in Jasper, Texas. Uncle Hollis & Family,
We have such great memories of Aunt Carolyn and your family. The 4th of July
Powell Family Reunions were the best! We will all miss Aunt Carolyn but know that she is having a great time with Dad, Uncle K.T./Aunt Iva, and Uncle Alfred. You can bet that The Powells are being discussed. This will be a hard time for you all and we will be praying for you!

What a wonderful teacher she was! I remember when we left for Christmas holidays she was Ms. Stewart and when we came back in January she was Mrs. Powell! So needless to say she was my 2nd grade teacher at Golden Acres Elem. I was at Golden Acres from the 1st through the 6th grade and lucky to have great teachers and I consider
Mrs. Powell one of the best! Deepest sympathy to all members of her family for I can tell she was deeply loved!

Carolyn was a wonderful teacher and friend. She taught both of my sons, Tim & Michael Starr in second grade at Bailey. I worked with her for many years and attended Bailey Prayer Group with her after I retired from teaching. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and a strong Christian woman. We all loved her and will miss her very much.

It was a joy to have Carolyn as a part of my life from a very early age. I thank God for Carolyn and Hollis and others who served as such fantastic, righteous roll models as I grew up. They shared their lives and their homes to help me grow up well. Carolyn, you will be missed till we meet again.
God be with each of her family. You had a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister...
