Mrs. Jessie Barnard Morrison, age 96, passed peacefully and joyfully into Heaven on Monday, April 7, 2025, at their home in Richmond,Virginia. Jessie was the fourth of five children born to the late Alvin and Ettie Barnard in Meadows of Dan, Va. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Barnard; and three sisters, Hazel Helms, Inez Hylton, and Vera Seigler.
The Barnards were one of the first families in the area to have electricity. Even though the family did not have much, they generously shared food, work, and love with others in the community who were in desperate need during the 1930’s. This generosity was passed along to each of the Barnard children and became part of their legacy. After graduating from Mars Hill College, she married the love of her life, Claude, and they just celebrated their 71st anniversary. Jessie had a long and successful career as a Social Worker, first in Patrick County and then in Fairfax County, retiring from Fairfax County, Va. She spent her career doing one of the things she loved and did so beautifully, taking care of others. Jessie also had an incredible business sense and took care of the family finances for most all of her life. She was a talented artist and loved growing and arranging flowers – nurturing them as she did her family. Jessie was the most humble, loving, caring, selfless companion, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and servant of the Lord that anyone could hope for. She never had an unkind word for anyone. Outpourings of kind words about Jessie have come to the family from every direction. Everyone who knew her said she was one of the sweetest people they had ever met. Her love will always be with us.
Mrs. Morrison is survived by her husband, Claude Henry Morrison; two daughters, Celia Morrison, Greta Skeen and husband, Greg; one son, Eric Morrison; two grandchildren, Aaron Skeen and wife, Rebecca, and Harry Skeen; and four great-grandchildren, Max, Nora, Henry, and Emma Skeen. In addition, she is survived by two sisters-in-law, Dr. Marie Brink and Nancy Martin; so many special nieces and nephews; a godson, Robert Pugh; and many devoted caregivers at Tuckahoe Pines Retirement Community.
A funeral service for Mrs. Morrison will be held Sunday, April 13, 2025, at 3:00 P.M. at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church with Pastor Shawn Carter officiating. Burial will immediately follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
