Peter Abt Obituary

Peter James Abt, 77, of Southington, passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2024 at Midstate Medical Center in Meriden. He was the beloved husband of the late Joan Abt, who passed away in October of 2022. Peter was born to the late Louis and Helen (Harrison) Abt on December 17, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York. He is survived by two sons: Kevin Abt and his wife Abigail of Atlanta, and Michael Abt and his wife Julia of Philadelphia; three grandchildren: William, Hazel and Isabel Abt; and a brother: Charles Abt of NY. Peter received a bachelor's degree from St. John's University in 1969 and D.D.S from Georgetown University in 1972. Pete married Joan in 1973 and they moved to Southington, CT in 1977 to raise a family "out in the country." He started an orthodontistry practice at the center of town and dedicated over thirty-five years to family orthodontistry as Southington's orthodontist. He provided a peaceful home for his two sons to thrive and took great pride in their successes and joy. Peter was most content in witnessing the happiness of those he held dear, his wife, brothers, sister and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends. Peter cared dearly for his friends and family, both of which meant the world to him.
His funeral will be held on Monday, April 8th, 2024 at 10:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to St. Dominic Church, 1050 Flanders Rd., Southington for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, 95 Flanders St. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Sunday, April 7th, 2024 at the funeral home from 2-5 p.m. For online condolences and directions please visit www.dellavecchiasouthington.com.

I worked with Joan for several years in Southington High School as a speech pathologist and enjoyed immensely our chats and an occasional rendezvous
for breakfast. I found her to be a wonderful caring person and teacher. She helped many young people to grow in learning the English language, achieving academic success and feeling good about these achievements. We kept in touch by phone since moving to Virginia to be with our grandchildren. We are so sorry for your loss.
