I met Coach Erickson at the University of Wisconsin, when I was a senior in high school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1964. He was a gentleman. I made the tough decision to play basketball at the Virginia Military Institute. My dad met the Coach at an FCA meeting in New Jersey around 1979, where my dad committed his life to Jesus Christ. Coach Erickson tried to recruit me to play basketball for the University of Wisconsin in 1964. I had a wonderful trip to Madison from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was treated extremely well for the entire weekend. I narrowed the college offers down to UW and the Virginia Military Institute. I chose VMI, because my dad served in the Marines in the South Pacific during WWII and I wanted to make my dad proud that I selected a military college. About twenty (20) years later, my dad attended an FCA meeting in New Jersey with Coach Errickson as the Keynote Speaker. The two gentlemen met after the meeting, and "Talked Basketball. My did had just recently (back then) committed his life to Jesus Christ and was reading his Bible.

John and Polly were marvelous Christians who reflected God's love in every way in their daily lives. They were just good to be around. Barbara and I well remember their friendship.
John was a great storyteller and right now I'll bet he has some of his many friends gathered around in Heaven as he tells them about his Wisconsin BB team upsetting No 1 Ohio State by 19 points in 1962, and having OSU's super stars, Jerry Lucas and John Havilchek come over to congratulate John on the win. John thought that was a real class act which he never forgot. Oh, on and on the stories would come. John and Polly RIP, you've earned your promotions, with all the rewards God has for you.

I knew John (and Polly) when they were attending Hillcrest Covenant Church in Prairie Village, KS. I always thought the world of John with his great presence and way of going through life. He was a gift to our faith community for many years!
