C.E. Cooney Obituary

C.E. "PEP" COONEY BELOVED HUSBAND, FATHER AND GRANDFATHER C.E. "Pep" Cooney, beloved husband, father and grandfather and a longtime business and community leader, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003. He was 70. Born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, he learned his sense of community growing up in America's heartland during the Great Depression. He loved and excelled at sports, particularly in wrestling and baseball, and earned the Eagle Scout badge as a Boy Scout. Pep attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the University of Utah, majoring in marketing and advertising, two areas of study that would serve him well during his long, distinguished and successful career in the television industry. His imaginative marketing served him well in another area: he proposed to his wife, Cheri, in a TV commercial. His 44-year professional career began in advertising and program sales, earning him Salesman of the Year honors at 3M Corporation. He joined KRON-TV in San Francisco, eventually becoming general manager and then president of Chronicle Broadcasting. He moved to Phoenix in 1977 as president and general manager of KPNX-TV Channel 12 until 1995. During his tenure, television was taking on an entirely new direction through technology and growing as rapidly as the Valley of the Sun. Pep played a key role in the expansion and reach of both and his legacy remains as strong today as it did when he retired as president of KPNX Broadcasting Co. and senior vice president of Gannett Broadcasting in 1998. Over the years, Pep devoted much of his time and his energies to many civic, business and professional organizations. He served as United Way Campaign Chairman and on the Samaritan Health Service Board of Directors; the KPNX-TV Minority Advisory Board; the NCCJ Board of Directors, which he chaired from 1988-90; the First Amendment Coalition Board of Directors; the Theodore Roosevelt Council of the Boy Scouts of America Executive Board; the Fiesta Bowl Board of Directors, for whom he served as director and president; the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University; Harris Trust Bank and United Blood Services, Inc. Two scholarship funds have been established in his name at Arizona State University, the C.E. Pep Cooney Leadership Scholarship at the Cronkite School and in the College of Public Programs. Pep received numerous awards including Distinguished Citizen from the Phoenix Union High School District; All City's Honor Convocation; Distinguished Eagle Scout Award; Distinguished Achievement Award by the College of Public Programs at Arizona State University; and the Anti-Defamation League of B'Nai B'rith "Torch of Liberty Award." He is survived by: Cheri Cooney, his wife; children: Nicole Cooney Blomquist, Rhett Cooney, Holly Cooney Whiteman and Sean Cooney; grandchildren: Rick Rampton, Megan Rampton, Nick Rampton, Taylor Shepherd, Zach Shepherd, Seamus Cooney, Geoff Blomquist, Garrett Blomquist, Erin Blomquist O'Connor, Nathan Blomquist, Chase Cooney, Sean Cooney, Caitlin Cooney, Lexi Whiteman, Alyssa Whiteman, Madison Whiteman, Chloe Whiteman and Nicholas Whiteman. His life will be celebrated with friends and family from 7-10 p.m. Friday evening at the Arizona Country Club, 5668 E. Orange Blossom Lane in Phoenix. Public funeral services are scheduled Saturday beginning with a viewing at 10 a.m. at the LDS Arcadia Ward, 4225 N. 56th St. in Phoenix with services to follow at 11 a.m. A private graveside burial will follow. Arrangements are being handled by Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either of two scholarship funds: The CE Pep Cooney Leadership Scholarship, c/o Robby Jackson, ASU Foundation, P.O. Box 873208, Tempe, Ariz. 85287-3208, or the CE Pep Cooney Scholarship in the Cronkite School, c/o Judy Heasley, Arizona State University, College of Public Programs, P.O. Box 870803, Tempe, Ariz. 85287-0803. Checks to either scholarship should be payable to the ASU Foundation. The specific scholarship fund being donated to should be written on the check's "memo" line.

It's been a long, long time, Pep, since you arrived on board KTAR as the new President and General Manager. I was one of those on the Sales welcoming committee -- and I have been retired from channel 12 for 23years! I know that none of the current staff would remember me, but that is unimportant. I just want the family and crew to know that I share their grief and deep sense of loss.

Dear Cooney family:

Words seem hollow now; however, I am certain that Pep's presence will remain felt in your family and his extended media family in the Phoenix community for years to come. He was a distinguished man, a formidable businessman, and a gentle man.

I so enjoyed my work with him in the community, and the times I worked with the staff at Channel 12 while he was its general manager. He made an impact.

My prayers will include you.

"Pep"

He was a man of class. When I worked at KBBC/ KTAR Mr. Cooney took the time to show me a general manager can be a man of class, trust and a friend at the same time. Thanks to Mr. Cooneys family we had a chance to meet and work with the "Best of the Best.

My deepest sympathy to the Cooney family. As a long time resident of the valley, I always appreciated Mr. Cooney's 'editorials' even if at times I disagreed. The leadership he gave to channel 12, and his service to the community will have a lasting impact. May your faith keep you strong at this time and always.

God bless you all.

Dear Family,

I am deeply saddened to hear of your loss. Mr. Cooney was a wonderful, warm and friendly man. I worked at KPNX as a photographer from 1982 to 1988. I saw him often in the station and remember his smile and enjoyed his presentations to the staff. He will be missed by so many. Sincerely, Dorothy Clooten-Eiken
