Candace Anderson Obituary

Candace M. Anderson, Ph.D.
May 13, 1947 - February 19, 2014

A third generation Arizonan from a cattle ranching family, Candy was born in Ray, Arizona. This rugged pioneer heritage permeated her multi-faceted life. Reared in Phoenix, Candy was Salutatorian at West High School in 1965. She was witty, well-liked & cherished her girlfriends, The ThunderChicks. She studied German in Austria & completed her B.S. degree at Stanford University in 1969. By 1977 Candy earned a M.S. & a Ph.D. in Bio-Medical Engineering at Rice University. Paving the way for women in science, Candy excelled in the male-dominated field of engineering for 35 years. She put satellites into space, designed set-top boxes & developed 3D coding. In her brilliant career, she was granted many patents on behalf of her employers: Orincon, General Instrument, Motorola. Candy spoke three languages, enhancing her world travels. She hiked The Great Wall of China; scaled the Sydney Harbor Bridge; rode river rapids in Costa Rica.
She came, she saw, she conquered it all. Yet, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer, Candy succumbed on February 19th in San Diego, surrounded by her loving family. Candy is survived by her husband Don Becker, son Bowen Dillman, daughter Kelda Becker, sisters Alexandra Anderson of Phoenix & Carolyn (Dennis) Lee of Prescott, niece Tamara (Gary) Thompson & nephew Brandon Lee. A memorial service will be held on March 8th in California. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Candace M. Anderson, Ph.D. to Stanford University Foundation, The American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

Candy amazed me at Stanford - a girl studying engineering? This was astonishing to this New England girl, her classmate. Condolences to all the family and know that she is remembered far and wide by those who may have known her only a little time. Sincerely, Anne Makepeace

I met Candy in 1st grade and we continued our education together through West High. Judging by Candy's brilliant career, she apparently absorbed more than I did. We shared fascinating conversations as we walked to school together after my family moved to 17th Avenue (3 houses down from the Anderson's) after the 5th grade. After high school we went our separate ways, but through fellow classmates & reunions I would hear of Candy's not surprising successes.
I was deeply saddened to hear of Candy's death. I want all of Candy's family to know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of the Hollar family. Our sincere sympathy.

My very deepest sympathy to you, Don and family, as you mourn the passing from this life of dear Candace. I had the privilege of working with Candy at SAIC and the pleasure of calling her Friend. May the memories of sharing her love, intelligence and wit keep you all close during this difficult time and in the years to come.

My deepest sympathies for your loss. May God's Word strengthen you during this difficult time. For he will deliver the poor one crying for help, also the afflicted one and whoever has no helper. He will feel sorry for the lowly one and the poor one, And the souls of the poor ones he will save. Psalms 72:12, 13 Trisha Phoenix,AZ
