Sarah Lucy Obituary

Sarah Lindsay Lucy died July 14, 2023 in Portland, Maine after a long battle with Breast Cancer. She was surrounded by her family and close friends.

Sarah was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts July 28, 1950. She grew up in Lee, Massachusetts, attended local schools, graduating from Lee High School in 1968. She went on to graduate from Colby College in Waterville, Maine in 1972, where she majored in English. After traveling the world, she earned a Masters degree in Library Science from Columbia University. Sarah loved children and worked as a school librarian in North Carolina, New Hampshire and ended her librarian career at The Bishops School in La Jolla, California. She then worked toward a MFA degree and followed her passion for writing. She moved back to her beloved state of Maine in 2018. Traveling, writing, golf and birding were among her many hobbies. She loved her nieces and nephews and took great delight introducing them to travel, poetry, books, and the latest TV show. She was the "hip" Aunt.

In the last few years, Sarah spent much of her time with her childhood friend, Candy O'Brien Eaton and her husband Jim, on Little Deer Isle, Maine. There she found great peace and happiness. She was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Barbara Lucy. She leaves behind her brother Donnie Lucy, Bobby Lucy (Susan), Jennifer McBurney (Glenn) as well as her nine nieces and nephews who adored her.

Sarah's family would like to thank The Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, Maine where she received outstanding care. She was able to have her siblings, her dear friends Candy and Ina, as well as her Colby College friends at her side during her final days.

Memorial services in Lee and Maine are planned for a later date.

Sarah I knew from The Bishops School Library where I volunteered for several years! Goodness I enjoyed her lovely disposition with such an infectious laugh! Such a perfect match , Sarah and the Bishops students. She created such an accessible space for all. Bishops was blessed to have her at the library helm. Those were glorious days! Gone too soon sweet, Sarah!

Sarah and I worked together at Jonathan Daniels Elementary School in Keene. We had so much fun and developed some of the best units of study for my fifth graders, including annual field trips to the Clark Art Institute. She wrote a play/musical about the life of Jonathan Daniels, a Keene native who died in the Civil Rights struggle. The whole school performed in the play, and the fifth grade part included the Holly Near song, "We Who Believe in Freedom." It will always be on my playlist and I will always think of Sarah. She was a creative, generous soul.

Sarah and I were great friends, especially through high school and her first year at Colby. We took great road trips together to the beach, skied the Berkshires from Beartown and Otis Ridge up to Mt Snow and Killington . Sarah got her driver's license first, so the blue Lucy-mobile was frequently found cruising around Lee, Lenox, and Stockbridge as we searched for the next opportunity for mischief. Her life contributions to so many will be her legacy. Heartfelt condolences to all of her family - she will be missed.
