ELLEN BERLIN Obituary

Berlin, Ellen J. 51, of Needham, MA, formerly of Brookline, MA and West Hartford, CT passed peacefully on Sunday, June 8, 2014, comfortably surrounded by her loving family and friends, following a courageous, dignified, and unflinching battle with a brain tumor. Ellen was an adventurer, world traveler, lover of art and theater, and more importantly, she treasured family, friendship and life. She had a wonderful sense of humor and laughed often. She had stories about everything. Above all, Ellen's pride and joy was being a loving and devoted mother to Jeffrey Scott Berlin. Cherished daughter of Ruth and Bert Berlin, sister of Andrew Berlin and sister-in-law of Melanie Berlin and aunt to their sons, Benjamin and Daniel, of Davidsonville, MD, and niece to beloved Fran Baratz and family member to Edna Sears. Survived by many close friends who she held close to her heart including Veronica Dicke, Robin Sherman, Stacy Gross and Jan Fleischman, and nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and colleagues. Ellen graduated from Kingswood Oxford in 1980 and received her B.S. from Emory University in 1985. She loved her profession as a CPA and made it her priority to support the community. For over 30 years, Ellen held senior financial management positions at Combined Jewish Philanthropies, The Rouse Company Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Seidman & Seidman, and most recently, Director of Finance and Administration at Reach Out and Read. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, June 11, 2014, in the Sanctuary of Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Ave., West Hartford, CT with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Interment will immediately follow at the First Hebrew Society Cemetery, RTE. 12, Preston, CT. Following the interment, from 3:00- 8:30 PM, and on Thursday, from 2:30-8:30 PM, with a service each evening at 7:30 PM, the family will receive relatives and friends at the home of Ruth and Bert Berlin, 55 Uplands Drive, West Hartford, CT. In lieu of flowers, Ellen has requested that memorial donations be made to Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters Ellen J. Berlin Campership Fund at 333 Nahanton Street, Newton, MA 02459, or in memory in honor of Ellen J. Berlin to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for Adult and Pediatric Brain Cancer Research under Dr. Wen at 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445. On behalf of my family (Dorothy, Marlene and Vivelyn) I wish to extend our sincere condolence to the Berlin family in the passing of Ellen.Ellen's sweet smile is just as I remember it when I baby sat her and Andy when they were mere tots. What very sweet, loving and well behaved children they were. It's been decades since I saw them last. I will hold my memories of Ellen close to heart. I pray that her soul rest in peace.

As the one year anniversary approaches, I find myself thinking about Ellen and the joy she had in life. We were friends many years ago in Boston and then reconnected the year before she died. How extraordinary that her grace, easy laugh, practical nature and appreciation of life's beauty that was evident in her life was so present while she was so sick. Her character and spirit were so beautiful. I am also thinking of her son, family and friends who gave her so much happiness. We were lucky to have known her.

Ellen and I worked together at Reach Out and Read. She was so funny and loved Jeffrey with all of her heart. She would always light up when she talked about him. He was her everything.

She was my rock when I was in the hospital, she sat at my bedside during this time. She made sure I got there and was treated. She cared that much. I'll always remember that about her. When she cared, you knew it.

Her kindness and thoughtfulness is what I'll remember the most about her.

Rest in paradise.

Ellen was such a great supportive smart colleague and friend during my years at ROR. When I first moved to the UK she volunteered to safeguard my little box of treasured possessions in the closet of her new home. Always generous, always funny, always aware of others. I will remember her with enormous gratitude ad pleasure. Ron Bailey

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, and I wish I had words to comfort you. Ellen was a sweet, sharp and vivacious person, and I have thought of her often in the years since our high school days at Kingswood. May the Omnipresent comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jersalem, and may her memory be for a blessing.

I was heartbroken to hear of Ellen's passing. I met Ellen when my middle son, Lucas, and Jeffrey were in preschool together as "Scientists" at Temple Beth Shalom. I knew her to be kind and warm-spirited to everyone. It is especially tragic to lose someone so young, with so much life ahead of her. I wish her family peace and healing at this very difficult time.

Dear Ruth and Bert,
Its been very hard for the Sturmans this past week - living in Santa Barbara while our hearts are in West Hartford. First Ray Sorokin and now Ellen Berlin. It seems we should be with our friends at times like these, but 3000 miles is a bit too much for us these days.
We just want you to know that our thoughts are of you and your family and even though we are not there we share your tears.
I always remember Ellen as such a bright, shining and smiling girl with a cheery "hello" whenever she saw us. And then you showed us those wonderful photos of her son, who seemed to have the same kind of spirit as his mom. These are the things you never forget.
George and I are so sorry, but know that Jeffrey and the rest of your family will help ease the pain.
Our deepest sympathy,

Adrianne and George Sturman

I met Ellen while I was working at the brook house. Ellen was my favorite trustee, and her knowledge, wit and savy got me through many meetings. I was honored to attend her Louies birthday lunch and to be her friend. When I retired, ten years ago, Ellen gave me a serving tray that I called the "Ellen Berlin tray". It was a perfect. Decorated with stenciled grapes, a wine bottle and glass. I still have it.
Finding Jeffrey was her greatest accomplishment. I am sorry for your loss. Sincerely, Caryll Greene, North Easton, MA

When you sit down and reflect how busy life is with kids, work, and watching your parents grow older as well, and keeping up with the balance as life continues to go by. You never expect someone of your own age bracket to be gone so soon. I knew Ellen as an old acquaintance through my cousin. Every time I saw her, we picked up right where we left off.

It is so incomprehensible that she is actually gone. However, she will remain in everyone's hearts forever. Please accept our deepest condolences to the entire BERLIN family. Our thoughts will continue to be with you throughout this painful time. May she REST IN PEACE and know that she will be missed terribly by everyone she has touched.

Ellen was a very special person. She and I were last together at a farewell dinner for me when I moved south to Florida full-time from where we met in a Moms group in Needham, MA. Her total adoration of her son is my strongest memory and I loved her for it. Sending prayers - Cary and the Youngs

Sending love to Ellen's family, and especially to Jeffrey, at this sad time. Ellen and I worked together at Reach Out and Read, and I admired her dedication and drive. She was usually the first person to arrive at the office in the morning and the last one to leave. Her love for Jeffrey was also very clear - we had great conversations about his day-to-day adventures at school and camp, and I know she was so proud of him. I'm sure her spirit will always be with him.
