Michael Jennings Obituary

Michael Robert Jennings, 52, adoring husband of Ruth; loving and proud father of Carly, Miles, and Ryder; devoted son of Bob Jennings and Carol Jennings, dear brother of Lynn Jennings; cherished son-in-law to Carolyn and the late Dr. Stephen Winter; fond brother-in-law of Stephanie (Joe) Whitney; the most fun uncle to Neve and Jude Whitney and friend to so many. Mike grew up in Rockford running cross-country and playing hockey attending Guilford High School (1987), graduating from a dual degree 3-2 Physics- Engineering program at Grinnell College (1991) where he ran cross-country, and Washington University (1992), and earning an MBA from The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University (1998) where he met his wife, Ruth.

After graduating at the top of his class from the Engineering program at Wash U, Mike worked for Cooper Industries (later acquired by Eaton Corporation) where he remained for 5 years, rapidly ascending to Director of Operations Worldwide, moving next to Tenex Corporation in the role of Director of Operations. In 2001 Mike pivoted into management strategy consulting where he would spend the remainder of his career, working as a Partner at Bridge Strategy, Managing Director at Houlihan Lokey, and for the last two years Senior Vice President Global Operations and Strategy at Gallagher. He took great pleasure from and truly enjoyed the nature of his work, identifying and providing solutions to strategic problems across a variety of industries; and forging many close relationships in those with whom he worked. His work ethic and drive was unparalleled.

More than anything he loved his family, spending all of his leisure time with Ruth and his children and always, without question, making time for every single important (and not-so-important) event in each of their lives. He somehow managed to schedule work, hockey, fishing, marathon and tri training around their calendars. The joy he felt being around his children could be seen in his expression every time they entered the room or appeared on a video call – his entire face would light up. He prioritized their happiness and engagement with life over everything else. And the love story between Mike and Ruth was easily visible to anyone just from the way they looked at each other. He adored her and she him. They did everything together, talking on the phone multiple times a day, every day, throughout their 27 year relationship.

His kindness, laughter, humor and unparalleled love for living life to its fullest, willingness to try anything, and spontaneity will be deeply missed, fondly remembered and cherished. My deepest, sincerest condolences to his family. I only knew Mike professionally, but well enough to know he was one of the "good guys" on this earth. We talked hockey now and again, and something he once said will always remain with me. We were chatting about how easy it is to have a puck taken away (especially from me), and he said, "When that happens, go back and get it." And so every time I go back to get a puck that was taken from me, his voice echoes in my head. It makes me try that much harder. For that, and because he was such an inspiring leader and person, I will miss him.

Ruth Ann, I was so sorry to come across the obituary for your husband in the recent edition of the Chicago Tribune. It was just recently that your Mom walked by our house while I was in the yard and we caught up as well as one can when years have gone by. My thoughts are with you and your children.

So sorry to hear, my thoughts are with your family at this time.

Even though I have not seen Mike in a long time, he was a big part of my life growing up. Since we lived a couple of houses down, there were so many baseball, football and basketball games played, and boy Mike could play, especially basketball.
Such a nice boy and looks like he grew up to be a great person, he will be missed.

Mike and I went through high school together but didn´t really become friends until we were probably Juniors. He was athletic and popular, and I was more in the "alternative music" clique. He and Mike O´Brien were always together and the three of us somehow ended up really good friends by the end of 12th grade. Mike J wrote in my senior yearbook about how unlikely it was that a "jock" and a "waver" would become close friends. But we had, and we enjoyed a lot of great times together that last year. Unfortunately, we didn´t stay in touch much beyond our 10-year reunion, likely due to my Facebook aversion. Nevertheless, I will always have fond recollections of Mike and the laughs we shared. He was smart, kind, and talented, and I will always remember him the way he was then as a smiling young man with enviably long eyelashes, my friend Mike.
I wish his family peace and comfort. This photo is from our 1997 reunion.

My heartfelt sympathies and prayers to the Jennings family. I have many great childhood memories of Mike growing up across the street from his wonderful family. We played various sports and other activities along with other neighbors. I will never forget the fun we had together as kids! I will continue to keep Mike and his family in my prayers to heal through this difficult time. God Bless. Sincerely, Tony and Carrie Alt.
