Judith Alter Obituary

Judith MacBain Alter

July 22, 1938 - July 13, 2024

Fort Worth, Texas - Judy was born July 22, 1938, in Chicago to Dr. Richard Norman and Alice Peterman MacBain. She attended public schools in Chicago, Cornell College in Iowa, and earned a BA from the University of Chicago, an M.Ed. from Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, and a Ph.D. in English from TCU with a primary interest in the literature of the American West.

She was the author of over a hundred books, both fiction and nonfiction, for young adult and adult readers. From 1982 until 1987, Judy was editor of TCU Press; from 1987 until 2009, she served as director. She was a member and past president of Western Writers of America, Inc., former secretary-treasurer of the Texas Institute of Letters, and a member of Sisters in Crime, Women Writing the West, the Book Ladies, and University Christian Church. Her literary awards included two Spur Awards from WWA, two Western Heritage (Wrangler) Awards from the National Cowboy Museum and Hall of Fame, and the Owen Wister Award for Lifetime Achievement from WWA and induction into their Hall of Fame in 2015. In 2010, she was inducted into the Texas Literary Hall of Fame by the Friends of the Fort Worth Public Library. Judy continued to write throughout her life, publishing after her "retirement" 17 cozy mysteries, three cookbooks, a novel set in historic Chicago, the city of her youth, and two nonfiction titles about women in nineteenth and twentieth century Texas.

In 1964, Judy married Joel Alter of Bronx, New York, at Kirksville, Missouri. They moved to Fort Worth in 1965, where she began work on her Ph.D. and he entered practice as an osteopathic surgeon. They adopted four children before divorcing in 1982.

Judy's most important career, she always said, was raising her four children - Colin, Megan, Jamie and Jordan - as a single parent. She enjoyed frequent Alter family get-togethers in Fort Worth and Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she and her family spent many Christmas holidays, and she loved to catch up with the goings-on of each of her seven grandchildren, who knew her as "Juju." Her family fondly remembers weekly Sunday-night dinners, which included extended family and many friends and were occasions for cooking, lively conversation, and much laughter. Judy was a friend to all and offered wise counsel on writing, friendship, and navigating the crazy situations that life could throw at you. Many treasured her uncritical love and friendship.

Judy's other passions included reading, cooking, and throwing fabulous parties and happy hours. She loved to entertain and did so often. Friends and family will remember her for meals shared, at her table and others, for laughter often shared and some silly moments, for many happy times spent in the cottage she called her home since 2016, for her love of the dogs - and the occasional cat - that were lucky enough to cross her path, and for her habit of always making lemonade out of lemons. She was proud of her Scottish heritage and studied it deeply, treasuring the memory of a visit to Scotland in 2010, including stops at the MacBain Memorial Park and Culloden. Judy would tell you she had a happy, good life.

She is survived by her children-Colin and his wife, Lisa; Megan and her husband, Brandon Hudgeons; Jamie; and Jordan and her husband Christian Burton; seven grandchildren-Madison, Eden, Sawyer, Morgan, Jacob, Ford, and Kegan; and friends and colleagues too numerous to count, whom she held dear.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, John R. Peckham, and an infant sister, Isabel Jean MacBain.

A celebration of Judy's life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24, at University Christian Church in Fort Worth. Friends may make memorial contributions to the Humane Society of North Texas or the charity of your choice.

Judy was the gracious lady who got me started writing. I took a course she taught at TCU. She was a good teacher, never harsh and always encouraging, even though I´m sure some of us needed a lot of help!
We remained friends over the years and she always answered my emails or notes. We attended the same church and always spoke or waved at each other! I read her columns and sometimes commented. I felt we had a lot in common although I was remiss in letting her know. She was much more disciplined in her writing than I have ever been. I will always remember Judy and feel fortunate to have known her. With much affection to her beautiful family!

I knew Judy only through her blog and online programs and discussions with Sisters in Crime, but she always came across as dearly loving her family and cherishing her times with them. She was generous with her wit and wisdom, breaking the ice for many new authors who were afraid their questions were too silly to ask. We'll miss her in the crime writers community.

I have known Judy Alter by reputation for 25 years. She was kind enough to sit on a book panel for To Kill a Mockingbird at Haltom City Library 10 years ago. I admired her as author, TCU Press editor, and Friend of the Fort Worth Library.Via Facebook we compared antics of our black poodles. I enjoyed the recipes she shared.
RIP Judy.

There are so many good memories with Jude. I loved debating her about politics. I could get her riled up pretty easily when I wanted to.

We also talked about so many other things (food, travel, heritage, wine, and the list goes on). She was always positive and cheerful. I admired her creativity, ambition, and thoughtfulness. She loved her family, friends, and animals unconditionally.
She made an impact in my life and for that I am forever grateful.

Jude, I will see you on the other side! You are definitely in a better place. I love you and God Bless!

A visit to Fort Worth from Los Angeles wasn't complete until I got to see Judy and share a cup of tea or a glass of wine. Her friendship with Subie & Phil Green was a delight to enter into. I will sorely miss her, as will her dear family. Breathe peace each step of the way.

My condolences to her family. I only knew Judy through her writings, blogs, and Facebook postings. Many mornings found me pondering what Judy would have to say about the previous day´s news and happenings. So very often her take was spot on and clear as well as concise. I will miss those nudges to stay true to my convictions and truths.

My heart is with all of Judy's family as you mourn her passing -- I know her absence leaves a huge hole in your world. Though I never met the family, I felt like I did from all of my conversations with Judy over the past ten years. You were her life, and she somehow squeezed in being a prolific author, friend, and source of laughter and joy for the rest of us. Will miss her so much.

She leaves such a big hole in the writing community. I instantly bonded with Judy at a TX event years ago, both of us being from IL and having moved to TX, and both being mystery writers, although she wrote other things in the past. She remained a good friend for all of these years. I feel I almost know the family, through her blog. Wish I could hug all of you. You have my deep condolences.

I send my condolences and prayers to Judy´s kids and grandkids. I have been talking to her several years before she moved in the cottage. She helped me a lot when I as adopting Tay. She said she would do the same thing if it was necessary even at her age. I wasn´t one that she invited over but I knew her and her kids thru messages and her blog. I will never forget her. Reading her last book now. God bless yall

Susan and I send our condolences to the entire Alter family. My favorite memory(ies) was receiving the call from JuJu on a Friday or Saturday; " I´ve been planning on trying this new dish, you and Susan need to come Sunday!" Always delicious and always presented with love. A fine neighbor, friend, writer, cook and mentor to so many..
