Charles Derrow Obituary
1949 - 2018
Charles Alan "Chuck" Derrow MD died at home on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 from frontotemporal degeneration, a long and progressive organic dementing illness. Chuck was born in 1949 in New York City, the eldest son of David and Muriel Derrow (née Bernstein), and moved to Columbus in 1963. He graduated from Eastmoor High School, the University of Michigan, and then Ohio State University College of Medicine. After completing residency in internal medicine in New York, he returned to Columbus and practiced in primary care for over 20 years. He served as medical director of several Columbus extended care facilities, and later added a subspecialty certification in Geriatrics. Chuck was preceded in death by his mother, Muriel, as well as by his first wife, Sherry Mulne. He is survived by his loving wife and devoted caregiver, Susan Couden; his father, David; his siblings: Martin (Wendy), Sandra Perry (Keith), Andrew (Janis), and Philip (Barbara); his children: Solomon (Catherine), Shoshana Krilow (Chad), Avram (Ginger), and Zoe Mitchell (David); his stepdaughter, Etana Caplin. He is survived also by his 9 grandchildren - Dovra, Gabrielle, Rafael, Charlotte, May, Zev, Jianni, Drea, and Charlie - who knew him in different ways but all loved their Saba. Funeral services will be held at Epstein Memorial Chapel, located at 3232 E. Main Street in Columbus, on Thursday at 10:30 AM. Family will receive visitors Thursday from 1-3 PM and from 6-8 PM at 2247 Astor Avenue in Bexley. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the University of Michigan School of Public Health's Lawren H. Daltroy Memorial fund, which provides support to students focusing on physician/patient communication. The fund was established by Chuck in memory of his best and oldest friend. Chuck was my physician when I lived in Columbus for a few years in the late seventies. His care was focussed and oriented in ways that were to my ultimate benefit. I grew up with his first wife, Sherry. I know that Chuck loved her during their years together, and was so proud that she took such excellent care of herself. He is by far the best physician I have ever had. He was someone I very much liked and respected. Chuck was always so pleased to have, in me, another patient who was also a graduate of UM! He was very kind to me in those days, and I shall never forget his influence. My his family be comforted among the mourners of Zion, as they mourn both wonderful parents.

Chuck was one of the brightest, up to date, and intellectually honest physicians I have ever known. The patient always came first to Chuck, who advocated constantly for his patients with other providers and payers. His patients received the best and most appropriate care possible. His was a voice of reason and conscience. We will miss him. My condolences to his wonderful wife Susan and family.

My condolences to the family.
I went on a "Chuck Derrow Memorial" ride today. I thought about a Midwest Double Century ridden when we were both a lot younger. I thought about the many rides through the Hocking Hills and all the climbs up Snorting Ridge with Chuck lecturing me about Jewish history all the while. I don't remember much about the history, but I remember Chuck.

I remember Chuck from EHS days. Smart and a "good guy.". It's hard to realize how many of our class of '67 are gone. My sympathy to his family.
